The 3rd Annual SL Game Developers Competition launches Monday in Arcadia 1 at 5 PM PST. Play games, meet the game developers and compete with Lindens!
The competition entrants were selected by nominations in the forums in early 2006, and were each given 1/4 of a sim in Arcadia 1 and Arcadia 2 on which to create a game.
This year’s contestants:
Tech Warfare by Eckhart Dillon (real time strategy game)
Boogie Board by Hox Hauptmann (multiplayer word game)
The Collective by Grim Hathor and Matthias Zander (strategy game)
Danger Zone by Rifkin Habsburg (simple strategy game)
SLictionary by Salem Penguin (prims instead of a pad)
Dark Life by C. Prefect, Mark Busch, and P. Cotton (role playing game)
Castle Wars by RacerX Gullwing (medieval war game)
BloxSL by Moriz Gupte (2 player puzzle game)
Winners will be chosen based on which game earns the most Linden Dollars between March 20th and May 12th. I'm going to table my opinion right now to post that on its own, given I already offloaded it to another forum. But... huh?

Huh what? Seems fairly straightforward to me. If it's the cruel touch of commerce, I'd say it's overdue that attractions in SL that people will pay for are introduced, since the free money has come to a half. The prize itself isn't really that impressive, so again it's a matter of "free publicity" and "can you make money off it", I guess.

Okay then. I'm going to get right into it. One, I missed the memo apparently. Was there an in-world announcement about this somewhere? Because I just checked the one forum I haven't read in a month or two, and actually found the nomination thread: /165/7b/85759/1.htmlNot that I likely would, given the events of last year. Just... err... huh? Two, competing on profit margins by vastly different games? Well. That's a debate on its own matter. I'm going to sum it as thus, then. Did anyone besides me not hear about this thing until now? If it's just my own forum habits, I'm not as worried here. But I'm more than a little confused on the nature of this, now. Linking to the original thread might have helped.  And lest we forget the hidden text: Because they broke my game irreparably last year, I don't get a chance to compete and possibly go to E3... =/

As for the competing based on money thing, I think it's more than worth discussing. I'm going to step away from this thread now, because now knowing the way they're doing it, I'm rather upset. More than upset. But given it's not their explicit fault on the matter and happen to be personal... I'll live with it.

Game developers mean nothing to me really.
What I've seen LL do as in terms of reward wise is almost dispiciple.
Why do we need to have contests in the first place? When the fact is, content developers receive no real incentive for developing content. Other than the fact you can earn $L.
So why bother?
This is my own personal gripe with LL too. I feel your pain Jeff.

I heard about it, but only after someone else had stated that Numbakulla wasn't suitable and stopped them voting for us to participate  . And I didn't realise that this was the 3rd Game Dev competition...I don't remember it being flagged up like that? I thought it was set up to have something in world when SL participated in a conference...or am I way off track there? Anyway, I didn't link the two things together. Cali

If you go read the nomination post on the games forum the lindens addressed pretty much every single issue people had with this. |
