What's so bad about getting prizes?

I see Bo's post that at an event tonight there will be no lame prizes. I can't post in response to ask what that means so I'm posting here.

I've gotten some awesome prizes at contests, including a bikini and a gorgeous formal gown (this is at other people's venues). Keeping in mind that people holding events now are doing so AT A COST and that part of what is killing events is the willingness to THROW money at attendees rather than provide actual entertainment, it makes sense that people would offer prizes rather than cash at contests. That or charge everyone to get in and then divvy the prize raised from the door charge between the host and the winner.

What's so lame about getting a prize? At many of our events, we give away really awesome prizes (often items that have taken hours and hours of work on the part of the creator, or even, sometimes, custom-made collectibles by top designers). Is it lame to give just some kinds of prizes? Or does the community only want to participate in contests if there is cash money to be had as a reward?!?

I hope it isn't the latter. That would make me quite sad. I've always enjoyed getting prizes, whereas getting cash, particularly just for dressing a particular way, has often made me feel a little bit guilty. What do you folks think? Should event venues not only be paying for teir, paying for hosts but also throwing money at guests? And if so, how long do you think they can afford to do that now that DI is dead?

I've no problems with getting free money as a prize, in my opinion it's the best kind of prize available (like getting money for your birthday). However getting object/clothing/script prizes is also good because sometimes it's more valuable than a simple prize of say, L$100. I've been awarded clothing sets before for being at events which are sold for L$300 normally.

It's a win-win situation either way, so I can't really dub any prize "lame" unless it's of exceedingly poor quality or it's a freebie object.

I see Pers you misunderstood my event post. I said we would do no lame prizes, I never said all prizes are lame.

We at ruins or any other club I am running feature only the best prizes. At Ruins we are fortunate enough to have a group of the best sponsors out there. In fact, tonight at our Ravers Ball we are giving away not 1 but 2 A78 Gecko Helicopters by Aerlink Designs to the best dressed male and female in black and/or white.

So you see Pers, no lame prizes! Just the best prizes in SL

hmm call me rude but... why do you always have to "bribe" peoples at events, i mean if you need to make prizes and stuffs, maybe you should rethink your event and see why it need a prize to boost it...

Hell isn't the purpose of an event to live something entertaining?

Prizes are PART of entertainment, and part of fun.

I used to do Game Show Channel in TSO where prizes (money, usually, but others as well) were of course a huge part of the role play. (You don't go on Match Game and NOT win something.)

But prizes are a part of lots of other entertainment, besides game shows, and provide fun and excitement (which = entertaining). What's a party without party favors? Gift Certificates are especially wonderful prizes to offer. I got my Five and Dime glasses with one I won at a contest, and I love those glasses and wear them all the time!

Whats a party with out Swag? And further finding outfits that match the event theme and then checking out your fellow party guests and voting is part of the fun. And hey who doesnt want to go all out for a cool prize.

I live intellectual events and cultural events. I go to them as well as live music events all the time. But hey some times you just want to party and win prizes. If life 1st and 2nd is all about balance something has to balance out the purely high brow events

And who's never heard of door prizes, raffles, and gifts? Or even advertisements, some people like to get "street cred" by giving freebies to clubs to hand out as prizes so you'll get more business if people like what you make.

More prizes won means more stuff in inventory. A better prize for some would be take something from their inventory. Preferably somthing named object, or new socks, or something like that.

OOO! What I wouldn't pay!
03-22-2006 00:29
Now THERE's a service! If only someone would rez each and every one of my objects in inventory and see if any were worth keeping I would so pay good money for that!

I'm kinda half inclined to be swayed that the event itself should be what people are there for. For our Wednesday night Bedtime Storytelling, the biggest part of the prize for alternate endings is the privilege of naming the story (kinda like in What's My Line, Anyway, where the winner gets to read the screen credits). =D Know what? That event has been running for over a year every Wednesday night.

I think we have put too much emphasis on the swag in SL and have trained event-goers to believe that they have to be bribed to leave their homes. I agree that prizes can be fun and plan to dedicate quite a few really awesome ones to our upcoming opening on March 31-April 2 (shameless plug, I know, but Bo got his in), in particular to our treasure hunt on April 1.

Nonetheless, we are entering a phase where it has never been more expensive to produce an event. If we keep expecting huge cash giveaways all the time, we, as event-goers, are going to suffer with lack of diversity. If we can foster a communal respect for event venues and hosts (for instance, imagining for a second that we should be paying them and not them paying us) then maybe we have a chance to keep and foster more diversity in world. I'm not talking high brow stuff... i'm talking all stuff. Why shouldn't someone be able to charge to put on a truck pull? :-) Heck, I'd pay for that. especially if it involved big tires and lots of splatting mud!
