Help with permissions and groups

I seached and saw related posts but didn't see anything that explained in a way I could understand how to apply to my situation so I will ask here since I could not find a better forum section that I could tell would apply.

I created a group with my partner and one other. We bought some land. We each want to be able to buy or create stuff on the property that each of us can change as we like, just as if we had bought a place irl. But we keep running into permission problems. What is the best way to set this up ? Whats the best way to set permissions on things we all want to use in our own place?

For example: At first I thought it was good enough to have the property in the group and have each of us as officers in the group, and have the property deeded to the group. But I could not move things my partner had dropped. So I had her change the permission on the objects that she dropped to "Share with group" and "Allow annyone to move" and thought that would work. Recently I bought a radio and set it with those permissions, I could change the station list in the internal notecard, but I could not hear it playing, so someone told me I needed to deed it to the group. So I did, now I can hear it and change the stations, but I cant interact with the notecard anymore, its all greyed out. So I guess since I deeded it to the group I and even though Im an officer I cant modify the station card anymore ? This has me all confused. Any suggestions on how to best manage permissions around our own property would be appreaciated.

Thank you.

Hi Mac.

I'm far from expert on the ins and outs of group owned land or jukeboxes, but my personal experience with shared permissions for prims in SL is that there basically are none. The Grant Modify Rights option included on your friend's list is not really a viable option, in my view, rather it can be a nightmare to rely on it. My suggestion is that you all accept not being able to mod each other's objects and plan accordingly. For instance, one person in the group constructs the shell(s), another does the interior walls, another the landscaping, and so on. Or, you each stake out your own area on the parcel and build it up together.

Thanks Kaboom.

I appreciate your answers, but it wasn't what I wanted to hear.

The jukebox reference was an example of how I thought I knew what I was doing based on sketchy documentation and verbal recomendations, and then got an unpleasent unexpected result becuase of my not understanding the ins and out of the permissions and how they work for individuals and groups.

I didn't understand your reference "The Grant Modify Rights option included on your friend's list is not really a viable option, in my view, rather it can be a nightmare to rely on it."

If you look on your friend's list, you'll see a button called Grant Modify Rights. By granting such rights to selected friends, they will be able to reposition your objects, however, they cannot duplicate from that object, nor, to the best of my recollection, will they be able to modify it beyond repositioning it. This might not be a big deal if you are talking about furniture and things like that, but to combine such multi-user prims within one object or structure is a nightmare.

Also, to the best of my recollection, I found that once a friend, to whom I'd given modify rights, had repositioned one of my prims, I would then no longer be able to modify or delete it without error messages even though it still had my name on it. It's kind of similar to when you've used a texture that somebody gave you that did not have full permissions. If you've ever tried this, you'll know that once you've embedded that texture into one of your prims, that prim becomes virtually unusable even though it still belongs to you.

PS: If you want to mess with the Grant Modify Rights, do so on a prim that doesn't matter. Don't test it out on a jukebox or an object you care about.

Thanks again! I will try testing all of these permissions combinations on a simple box and test with another av.

As for the radio and the other objects I deeded and couldn't access anymore... I was finally able to sell them to myself and then they were working just as before. Thankfully, I was able to give my wife her easter gifts after all :D
