Many reasons:

1. New scripting commands. Being able to develop using the new commands before 1.9 gets here is useful. I was hoping to have my "Tiny Camera" view working before 1.9, for example.

2. Spam-free sandbox.

3. Beta-testing. There's a lot of stuff people do in-game that the Lindens don't. The recent "on_rez on teleport" thread, for example. If they kept the preview grid up all the time they'd get fewer "OMG, you just broke my product!" surprises.

4. Having a backup when the grid is down (which is also when LL can get a chance at REAL load tests).

I've got several scripts I want to test and LL has claimed a scripting bug has been fixed in the new build which I also want to test. Preliminary testing in the 1.9 grid seemed to show at least one other problem, but there wasn't enough time to really explore it.

I know about the advantages Argent, and I understand your reasoning Ralph, but concider this:

If the Preview Grid is down, that is probebly because they are busy patching/updating/testing.

If the grid is down and for a long time, that probebly means that they did not finish patching, or the latest configuration is just too unstable to open it up for us to access.

With these possibilities in mind, I think it'll be best for us all if it stays closed until its safe for us to waddle back in and start hammering script functions. Ne? =P

As crystalshard has said, the grid was closed on friday night pending an update, as they grid is preview its not manned 24/7 and therefore the update will probably continue on tuesday when the office reopens.

Aside from that the grid was officially closed on tuesday, although some access was available later in the week it was never officially reopened.

Since the SL Preview download isnt available anymore either, Id suspect they are getting ready to release another beta..? or 1.9?
