As promised, we'll announce the many planned community activities as details finalize for the Second Life Community Convention. So here goes...

We are pleased to announce the SLCC Design Showcase: celebrating the evolution of design in Second Life from 2002 through 2006. Content creation has been one of the most popular aspects in Second Life and we will showcase some of the best and most unique work from Second Life’s beta period through the present for the SLCC 2006.

Details:

Submissions will be featured in our Design Showcase held on the in-world convention land donated by Linden Lab for the days surrounding and during the convention.
The Design Showcase will have a special featurette on the SLCC website and publication.

Prizes will be awarded for the Top Three “Best in Show” including either free passes to this year’s Convention or a complimentary 512m plot of land for the in-world convention if you can not attend the convention in San Francisco. Passes are fully transferable and can be given as a gift to someone else. Judging date and panel are to be determined.

Categories:

Fashion & Jewelry Design
Avatar Creation – Custom Avatars, Skins, etc.
Architecture
Furnishing Indoor/Outdoor
Vehicles
Photography, Sculpture, Machinima and Virtual Art
Odds & Ends (Gadgets, Weird, Miscellaneous, Scripts, Textures, Particles, etc.)
Animations & Animated objects

Guidelines for Submission

The showcase is open to all Second Life community members. Each submission must be accompanied by an entry form (details below). All work must be original, suitable to display in a PG simulator, and not violate any intellectual property rights. Mature works submitted will be featured on the website only. We reserve the right to refuse submissions that are inappropriate or offensive. Please submit the highest quality work as this is a design showcase and it is not intended to show everything ever designed in Second Life, but rather a broad vignette of design in Second Life. The theme for the showcase is “Something Old – Something New: Celebrating Design in Second Life 2002 through 2006”.

Listed below are some additional criteria for entering submissions.

Fashion design:
No direct photosourcing of entire outfits from recognized brands. Elements may be photosourced such as fabrics, trim, or minor details. But, the work itself must be original or an inspiration.

Animations:
If you are entering Animations, they need to have been created by you and not downloaded from a third-party site. Animations that are not your own that are used in home furnishings and other items are fine as long as you properly credit the person who did them and/or make note that they were not created by you.

Textures:
Any stand alone textures submitted into the competition must be created by the designer. Do not upload a plaid fabric texture from a website and submit it as your own. If you hand draw or paint a plaid texture and enter it that is fine.

Art & Photography:
All works of art must be original either created solely in Second Life or outside of Second Life.

Please Include the following with your submission:

(1) The name of your submission.
(2) The date on which the creation was completed;
(3) A paragraph about the creation and the design process of the creation.
(4) A brief biography about yourself and your work
(5) High quality JPEG images of each entry
(6) Which category you are entering the submission(s) in
(7) Your logo (when applicable)
(8) Contact information (Avatar Name, Email, Web Site)

You will be contacted via e-mail regarding the set-up of the Design Showcase during the in-world convention and any events related to the showcase.

Deadline for submissions is July 23, 2006; Please submit all items and inquiries via e-mail to Jennyfur Peregrine at SLCCFashion@gmail.com

We look forward to receiving submissions and putting the showcase together!

Regards,

-FlipperPA on behalf of the SLCC team

Obligatory scrutiny reponse...three questions:

1) What definitions or standards will be used to judge what is an acceptable entry (other than those listed above) - for example, what will constitue sufficient uniqueness or quality.

2) Who are the 'we' that will be applying those standards?

3) What will be the process for those who believe their submission has been inappropriately rejected?

1) The answer is pretty much those listed above. As long as they don't violate the TOS or anyones IP rights in anyway. Uniqueness and quality are just descriptions of what should be entered i.e. please do not submit a 10x10 plywood cube (unless its *really* an extraordinary 10x10 plywood cube. The showcase is just that - something in which we can show off some of the kewl things made in SL as we stated its not intended to show off everything ever made. Unfortunately, given some peoples attitudes i.e. the person who tried to register W-hats PWnnn 400 times on the registration page its just a clause to deter people from submitting bogus spam things.

2) Since, Linden Lab is donating the land in which the in-world convention and design showcase will be held on I would say that they would have final say in rejecting any questionable material. Its fairly liberal, but the sims are PG, we have more leeway with the website as stated in the original post. I don't forsee this being a major problem unless someone decides to grief the system.
The only other factor would be late entries after the deadline date and if we received more submissions than we would have space for.

3) Any rejections will be notified as to the reasons why they were rejected citing TOS violations, late submission, not conforming to PG guidelines, IP violations etc. If they want to argue that we can, but it is stated very clearly in the guidelines.

We're also working on having independent judges from outside of SL for the various categories. One has been confirmed, a professional fashion designer who works for QVC, who has never logged into Second Life.

Just to clarify a point that it is extremely hard for the entire or even a large segment community to vote on such things as we learned from the 2004 Fashion Expo it becomes a popularity contest and everyone just votes for their friends. This is not to say that we won't have anyone from the community at large involved in voting on the best of show awards for the Top 3 submissions.

Multiple Entries?
06-12-2006 11:45
I create all sorts of things ... hence the "This 'n That" in my market's name.

Can I submit an entry in more than one category? Can I submit more than one entry in the /same/ category?

Thanks :)

Edit: Re inappropriate rejections ... there is a wonderful bit in Mapp and Lucia, by EF Benson (1931) on the subject. Its a hoot!

Good anticipation on my next response *weg* I have no comment here ;)

In the meantime, I'd be happy to donate a few of my own stuff for display. Am sure I can come with up a copy of BRIXX or two.

Yes, we didn't put a limit on submissions per person. Granted the number of submissions should be considered within reason. We figured most people would submit under 10 versus 300.

We were originally considering an entry fee to submit, but that didn't seem right to do, because this is supposed to be fun and educational about the evolution of SL design. We decided on requiring the two paragraphs per submission, which will deter people from just dropping entire folders of content on us. :)

Furthermore, as Second Life goes to the Metaverse, and this becomes an open platform, Linden Lab risks lawsuit in court and will, I repeat WILL be reverse in court.
