I was just thinking that a game like SL would be cool in the old 2D RPG style. You know like the old 16 bit systems had. But allowing us all to setup homes in that kind of format. Building would be more on the photoshop based graphic artist but 3D modelers could render out some nice stuff too. So both would still have a part if something like that existed. Not that this will happen in SL, but I dunno. Just something I would have liked to play around with. I'm sure lag would be a bit better. I remember a link someone posted to an old game similar to that. But it was side scrolling and in CGA graphics? Eh? Hah! Anyone know where that is? I lost the name and link.

*imagines walking into a room full of campers, the level bars floating over their heads only 0.1% full to level 2*
*imagines a sex club or casino in 2D*
*imagines being pushed 10,000 screens away with a 2D sprite gun ripped from some old classic PC game*

I used to visit The Home of The Underdogs to download old favourites. They seem to be having some domain name problems at the moment but the site can be accessed from here. http://209.120.136.195/The other site for old stuff is at Abandonia. http://www.abandonia.com/Theres a game called 'Chaos Overlords' that I still play till this day. I wish someone with enough scripting ability could make this within SL. http://www.abandonia.com/games/339/ChaosOverlords/ChaosOverlords.htm

I had no trouble getting most of the old games (love old RPGs), but the 2D game that most resembles Second Life is... RPG MAKER XP Except it's not build and play at the same time, and it's only one player.

Checkout byond.com. It's 2D multiplayer and free. You'll see a lot of junk anime themed "worlds" (building games or RPG games) but don't let that dissuade you. It's a great unique game engine and the online portal always has some amazing diamonds in the rough. Good community and forums as well. Even had a micro payment system up till a couple years ago.

SL is in fact, already 2D. It's on a flat screen after all. The space, or 3D, is an illusion, akin to a 3D drawing that employs perspective.

My daughter plays a massively multiplayer platform side-scroller. I don't remember the name, but it's pretty retro.

SL is an shared 3D space with an in-program 3D modeler. Perhaps a 2D version would be a shared 2D space - a giant canvas - with a paint program instead of the object editor. You could buy parts of the canvas to make a painting you had exclusive control over, or paint in the sandbox canvas areas to do collaborative paintings.
