Is it more polite to leave the room first when going away?

When you're leaving a social gathering, it is polite to say bye to everyone. But once you've done that, is it more polite to simply dematerialize, or should you walk/fly out of the room before teleporting/Quitting?
(In real life we have to do the 2nd, but maybe that's just because of the basic physics of the game where you can't teleport without incredibly expensive equipment which uses much more energy than even Enron had at its disposal... and which hasn't been invented yet anyway!)

Hmmm its an interesting question. Generally when people say goodbye and then start to walk off out of the area, I wonder where they're going, especially if I know they're going to have to tp.
One of the things I commonly do is bring up the landmark to where I'm headed while I'm saying my goodbyes so that I know as soon as I'm done typing and I don't see anyone else about to say anything new I can hit that button and I'm out of there. That way there's no awkward standing around while I'm searching for my landmark.
What I hate is when I'm waiting for someone to send me a TP. I've already said goodbye, just standing around, no one saying anything waiting for that TP to come in. LOL it is an oddly 'only in SL' kind of moment.

Interesting question. Personally, I don't think there's anything wrong with dematerializing while in the midst of a crowd. However, I think it can be disruptive to rematerialize in the midst of a crowd. So for that reason, I usually TP home before quitting.

Some folks have SL set to start them out at the place they were when they last logged out. This might make you start out in a place where your unannounced arrival might be undesired. So it is probably best to leave the room and go somewhere that your sudden appearance shouldn't cause a problem, like your own land or a public spot like a welcome area or a sandbox.

It depends on the circumstances for me. If I'm talking with one or two pals and I have a long way to travel I usually just teleport out. Or rez a vehicle and fly home. If I'm closer to home I may just walk or fly away under my own power. If I'm leaving a group of people in a really calm and relaxing setting I might just walk away -- porting out might be a bit jarring. But if it's a big party there are usually people porting in and out like crazy. Sometimes I think it depends on how old one is as well. My own parents are similar to me, though they tend to not rely as much on the Lindens' porting technology. My grandparents very rarely port, preferring to walk or fly on their own. They usually don't venture too far from home.

Whatever you do, whether it be to dissolve into the nether or run like the wind, just make sure you don't use one of those giant poof particle things. Those are very 2004 and annoying as all get out. Whoever uses them should be banned from the intarweb. As long as you don't use one of those, you could kill everyone in the room upon your exit and still be ok in my book.

Personally, I've never seen anyone leave a room before TPing out. I'd actually find someone doing so a little bit weird to tell you the truth, and I suspect that most of the people that I know would as well. To address something that other people have brought up, I do keep the client set to log me in at my last location, generally so that if SL crashes or logs me out, I can come back to the same place. However, I too generally TP home before I log. That *is* polite. Someone may be happy to have you over as a guest, but not nearly so happy to have you suddenly appear in their house at some random time the next day when they may be busy with something (Or someone) else.

While we are on the subject of manners and leaving the room, one should also leave the room prior to breaking wind. That is all I have to add on this subject. P.S. Yes even if you are in a casino and you don't think anyone will hear. It's not the sound that is the danger.

You can also set it to always log you on at your home location in the preferences so if you get booted orlog out at a place away from home, you don't experience those re-log-into-a-private-moment moments... Just a thought.
I myself tend to log home before logging just because I have a fast loading home whereas the Inn I work in is heavy duty on rezzing. I have logged out in my Inn only when I idle off by accident. But I usually TP out rather than walking but I tend to TP to the main area and walk to the Inn which is a nother bit. Do y'all TP *in* to a place or TP to a main area and walk?

I usually walk or fly out of the room anyway, just to keep things more 'real'.
*shrugs* Maybe I RP a little too much... I like realism, and unless I have a little device I can whip out and say "Scotty, beam me up!" I don't like just vanishing like that.

SL's a totally different animal. I'd say the goodbyes are the essential, once done it becomes a matter of taste how you disappear. But like Suezanne, I would rather you teleport home first instead of logging out directly. If you don't have a house, then whatever place you make home (like a welcome area) will do.

Interesting topic really. I usually just port out of where I am, saves me the time of trouble of trying to navigate out of a building, especially in high lag areas and clubs. I also make a point tho, of porting home before before I log - not only does it save me the possible emabarrasment of showing up at a private moment, it also gives me the option to start moving around before I fully re-rez on login, being as I know where everything is.

When arriving, i always Land Outside, then make an entrance. (Always Knocking or announcing myself before hand). When Departing, i leave the way i Came, Through the Door. I find it More Polite than abruptly dematerializing.
This is an Interesting Thread, Perhaps it's time we Worked out an "Emily Post" for On Line Manners.
Angel.

LOL - yes! A unique SL kind of embarrassment that doesn't exist anywhere else. Perhaps there are others.

No i'm more of a 'got to go *joink*' kind of person. I just log off or teleport away when ever I feel like it. I was friendly back in 2004. But we're 2006 now

But seriously, if I am in some sort of themed/RP area, I try to leave the room before TPing away. Otherwise, I just leave. Often times, I log out of SL at my home spot or another "private" space so as not to rez in on someone's partay. MM
