One or more of the programming staff have made and are making changes to the chat sytem currently running in the preview grid. These are changes that shouldn't be visible if they work correctly, changes that are part of future additional changes to benefit SL users. The precise nature of the future improvements was not specified. This would be a good time for folks to go to the preview grid and try to make sure that regular chat, group chat, IMs, and possibly scripted chat, all work correctly.

You mean like the inventory system that benfitted us all?

Chat works fine, they need to work on bugfixes.

If the wheel is in the process of being reinvented it is in our best interests to get in the Preview Grid and test. The inventory looks good, at least as far as I've checked it, but I've never had anyone to chat with, so that's unknown to me.

Why work on chat?

Lets see, the chat or 'channel' system used in Second Life is how probably 99% of all communication is done. Its a known fact that because of bad scripters improper use of speech and listeners in scripts can noticably slow down a sim.

If subsystem redesigns are being down that would allow messages to be more effeciently handled this is something everyone should support. This is not a trival beautification issue. This is something that effects a major portion of how the game interacts.

Please stop the pointless rants and complaints because the staff here has the nerve to dare work on something not in your personal todo list. Give them some credit and if they think chat needs some overhauling behind the scenes just take their word that it needs it. It might even be a prerequisite for changing how permissions work as part of the 'group management code. In systems i've personally worked on those types of systems usually have a lot of integration with each other.

So lets get on preview and see whats going on =-)

Sometimes there are good reasons for low-level changes...

One possible reason for the changes to the chat code are to make it scale better to a bigger world. I can remember some changes like that... the new code for moving from one sim to another, the new code for login and logout (much faster now, though there are those annoying "your account will not be available until 11:53" messages after a crash), and the new teleportation code. (Remember how long you used to have to wait for your attachments to be saved?)

TY for some great other examples. Glad more than one person understands these things.

Is it possible they plan to separate chat from the graphics? I would sure love to be able to continue talking even when my fps drops below 1 like it does much of the time.

I support and or recommend this statement.

I have to admit it bugs the hell outta me to listen to people complain just to hear themselves talk. Especially when most of those doing the worst complaining have no clue what goes on behind the scenes of the development of a game/platform of this nature. Ar,chair experts are usually just laughable...but in large numbers become an annoyance. I work in the game industry, and I can say it is nothing like these people try to paint things. Everyone has different skills and departments they work in. I am a modeller and texture artist...I have no programming skills...what "bugs" should I allegedly be working on instead of adding new art content?

It's laughable and shows a complete lack of understanding of how a corporate business of this sort works to think that every person employeed by LL and working on SL is a back end programmer that has the skills and capablility to do "bug" fixes. It doesn't work that way. Help test what is being done, offer suggestions and ideas on features, and give feedback...but leave the whining and crying about things you don't understand at home. It gets tiring.

I was on the Preview grid yesterday and ran into an inventory bug, which I reported. There wasn't anyone for me to chat with, so, I didn't think to check that part out.

Are you gunning for Torley's job... Uh, I mean...

Changes in the chat? You mean the new Jabber backend?
