I just recently paid a fortune (to me) for a piece of land ($10/meter) in a nice sim with nice neighbors and just out the same land up for sale as well as the other major landowner in the sim because some biys decided it would be fun to bild an obnoxious lub rught up to my doorstep and go on to laugh at me and resort to typical juvenile insults. Its been discussed over and over I am sure but all I was trying to do was make a pretty piece of land where people could relax - was never going to make money off it - some might even consider it a contribution to SL oly to come to the point I am selling the land and not likely to get what I invested.
I understand LL's need for money but I am convinced they don't start doing something about the crap they allow under the guise of its a free wprld and free speech they are going to end up with nothing but a tasteless wasteland filled with jerks that can get off on finding ways to cause ithers grief and not violate the almighty TOS. Good luck ti them if they allow that, much to my regret, I had visions of being able to do something nice here but the frequency I run in to jerks in the world has got me on the verge if just giving up and praying some other investors come up with a new world where you sont have to pay money to get abused.
Sorry but I needed to rant as there is nothing I can do acoording to the almighty TOS to prevent having to deal woth the crap and needed to vent
edit sorry for some of the bad spellong but frankly I am consoidering taking the loos and just quitting and dont have the energy to fix

Well, I believe that zoning is just right around the corner. There's even a forum for it here if you want to make your thoughts known! /261/1.html

Well, they're on pacific time, so they're probably not asleep, but not working, either. They'll be back around 9 AM PST, I'm sure.
Oh, wait, you're asking about something else.
Siggy's not here, so I'll fill in for him: If you can't afford to own the view, don't expect to own the view.

Why not rent or buy in a private sim?

Azure Islands, Dreamland, many others. If you don't like what's on the main grid do something about it. For myself, I like both, the main grid is wild and crazy, Dreamland is quiet an beautiful.

Quality rentals might be a nice idea to play up. I'm not sure how many folks who starts SL get the impression that the only way to have a space of their own is to buy/own land. I've come across some who agonize about affording it or finding land, but when asked what they plan to build there, have no idea. Maybe there isn't enough emphasis on the idea of renting? Or what about it doesn't appeal to so many? Maybe the renters aren't speaking up.

I can't speak for others but I prefer to own.. feels better to me on a scale of 'can I take car eof my expenses.' It also cuts out a weekly or monthly bill.

They ended up with this several months ago. The official Linden description of it is "compelling." Unfortunately, your only options are to rent land on a zoned estate sim, rent your own estate sim, or put up with the crap.

If it's any consolation, a lot of times you can just outlast whatever it is. I tend to stay put once I buy land (or "buy" land on Azure Islands), and I've seen a lot come and go. I've outlasted all of it.

Ralph, I don't cut tier. Right now I'm not paying any (looking for a 1024 to add to the group, have the 'free' 512 dedicated), but I pair my monthly tier. I did make sure it was automatically pulled from an account rather than pay some landlord in world. I already rent in the real world.. at least my avatar can own.

As a typical mainland sim matures, people filter out and, after a few months, most or all of the land ends up in the hands of a few owners who then consider the sim "theirs." This pattern, adoption of ownership even though we're technically renting from the host, is part of LL's definition of "compelling."

It is true that eventually the ugly builds often disappear in the night. For a very long time, I had this painfully ugly mangling of Siggy's hot tub sitting in the parcel next to my store. I think they were trying to make a waterfall or something, but they only got around to doing a small bit of it. Thankfully, it's gone now. But even if it weren't, it's not my land. Until I pay tier on the whole sim, I can only expect and demand attractive things in my own parcel.

edit sorry for some of the bad spellong but frankly I am consoidering taking the loos and just quitting and dont have the energy to fix So build a nice fence around the land and start banning the assholes who grief you. It's your land, you can ban up to 50 people... and if you're really that tweaked about it, and you've already hit your ban limit of 50, start making logs of when you ban each av, and rotate them off the list by date of ban... then, if they come back and grief you again, ban them again. Maintain the log in a simple db offline so that you can back up any abuse report you file on particular avs with time/date data. They have _backups_ of this place, they can backtrack and find every word you say in public chat, every teleport... like we keep having to tell new employees at my retail job: EVERYTHING YOU DO ON A COMPUTER CAN BE TRACKED ON THE COMPUTER, so anyone who does anything really stupid is gonna get nailed (in RL, they're fired, in SL, they're banned, suspended, or permabanned). Since SL does not have cops, just the Lindens, who cannot see everything AS IT HAPPENS, we have to play cop ourselves if we want our in-world experience to be enjoyable. SL is populated by RW human beings, who tend to behave like idiots when they think they can get away with anything they want to do without consequences. These idiots need to learn consequences. And no, SL is not guaranteed to be the perfect fairytale experience. You want sweetness and light, buy your own island and ban everyone but your dearest friends.

Renting is a viable and preferable option for me.
03-03-2006 02:04
I have been in SL for close to three years. During that time I have owned a varying amount of land for my stores and homes. During most of this time I was contributing 12K+ land to our small group for this purpose. In June of last year we rented land from Hiro Queso on one of his South Seas Islands for our Wedding. We loved it so much that in July we moved to Palau shortly after he added it to his group of Islands. The land is in our group name. We have full edit privilages on it. So I am actually on both sides of the situation here. Why this works for us... My stores being on land I own creates a consistant LM and visibility. (one since '03 and one since '04) We have a house in the air above one store but rarely use it as we like to "get away" from the business part of our SL. We even have some homes on adjoining property that we rent out. So why not buy a piece of land to build on? We rent land for our home because.. 1) It gives us the flexibility to move anytime we want with no hassles. (Great for if you get neighbors that drive you nuts) 2) We can pay in $US (The same as the tier would be if we owned it) or pay the equivelent in $L. 3) Where we are, it is required that you leave a water border around your island. This discourages building to the edge. (This has happened only once where we felt someone built too close) 4) You tend to get to know your neighbors better and they tend to be more long term. 5) Renting requires no investment to worry about recapping later. Granted, your satisfaction would largely depend on your landlord. We are very lucky that we have one of the best. He is constantly striving to make it a wonderful place to live. He addresses problems and concerns personally and not thru a "manager". He is not an absentee landlord that is just out to make as much money as he can with low maintenance. An example being...Recently he spread out his cluster of Islands to improve performance. (Most are now stand alone island sims) In short...We have never had a reason to want to leave, only reasons to stay. My advise is try renting, your commitment is for one month at a time. (This can go by quickly in SL) If you dont like it you can always go back to paying LL the tier and possibly running into the kind of hassle and loss of investment as described above. But, I bet like us, you will see far more advantages once you try it. Most important make sure you rent from a good landlord. I'll even share mine with you Just look in his picks on his profile and you will see what he has available. But hurry his sims fill up fast. Hope this helps to see the perspective of someone who both owns and rents. P
