Hi there all, very new to this world. I use portable applications often (eg Portable Firefox and Thunderbird) that run off my 1GB usb drive. I was wondering if there was a portable SL client that can be loaded onto and run from a USB drive and "taken" with you where ever you go, just plug in, get on the net and go. My work won't let me install applications but running them on my USB drive gets around this. Thanks.

I run nearly everything I can portably these days from a 60gb USB hard drive that fits in my pocket - means I can keep all my work and apps with me all the time and if either of my computers is stolen, there's nothing really important on them.
I haven't tried with Second Life yet but my initial thought is that it should be possible to get it to work. If I get time later today I'll give it a go. The problem with flash drives (which is what I presume you're using if it's 1gb) is that they're not really designed for intensive use and can be pretty slow. This may have a bearing on it's suitability for the cache in SL. BTW, for those who are interested in portable apps, there's a great site with downloads of a whole range of apps "made portable": http://portableapps.com/ _____________________

You can carry the INSTALLER on the flash drive. But if SL actually ran, it'd prolly kill your flash memory with the constant, unending stream or writing/reading/re-writing/forgetting that most physical hard drives have trouble with.
If you love your flash drive, be kind to it. Don't try that mess on it. |

For grins I once installed SL on a flash drive and it ran fine. However if you do this, be aware it stores the cache and settings on the hard drive.
Edit: Once it loaded the program it didn't have an excessive amount of read/writes to the flash drive since the caching was done on the system's hard drive. |
