Seeking Sci-Fi Confederacy

I'm a cybergrrl in a group called Suicide Queens and I've been frustrated with the lack of spontaneous Sci-Fi RP opportunities in SL.

For example, when I was in the Costello mafia family there was never a dull moment. The mafia RPers live the role day in and day out. You stumble across someone from a warring family in a mall and the guns come out.

I'd like to see the same thing in the sci-fi sims. Suicide Queens are rogues so it would be nice to have to duck the law or make shady deals with other players.

The problem is not the lack of people or playspaces. It's the lack of unity. In the mafia there were set standards and protocols that most people followed. With the the sci-fi stuff there are all these disjointed groups. I'd like to incorporate everyone into an overarching general scenario. We need people to live their roles. We need the people in the NPPD group to start patrolling Nexus Prime, for example. The heads of the different sci-fi groups need to get together and define their roles within the greater community and then live them. The Star Wars and Star Trek folks should have an easier time with this as their roles are already pretty strictly defined.

We also need participation from the sim owners. Give us a general idea of the story of your sim. Is the city ruled by an oppressive mega-corporation (Nexus Prime), or perhaps a tyrannical, facist government (Suffugium?). Or maybe, like Chaos, it is an idyllic place with a very dark secret.

Sim owners could keep the momentum by introducing loose story lines for their areas.

Sims could cross advertise. For example one sim could have a billboard advertising another sim as a vacation destination.

And we should settle on an RP combat system so we can play without accidentally griefing. I recommend the RPC system since it is relatively cheap at $200L. CrystalShard Foo's Frag Foo system is awesome but expensive.

The point is, if we unite these sims and the groups it will be much easier to spend our Second Lives in role rather than having to stop and say "Hey, how about you do this while I do that..." Situations will just happen.

hehehe, you forgot to the original group (Sci-Fi Geeks) and the original Sci-Fi fandom sim (northwest quadrant of Indigo).

Granted these are more for fandom in general than role playing, but you'll probably find like-minded individuals in the group and/or hanging at the Sci-Fi Museum. Good luck!

Fury, as much as I understand that you guys love to RP a mafia, I still believe that it might be a better idea if you dont "take out your guns" in the middle of a public place that is not designated for combat.

When I see people do that in my sim I ban them instantly. No questions asked.

I do not post "NO GUNS ALLOWED" signs - since I figure its common sense that no, I dont feel like seeing my sim's physics factor dropping to 0.30 time dilation.

I designed the Frag-Foo to allow people to combat with a system that works better then the SecondLife damage system - but if it is true that it is being used in public places like malls and other people's sims without their consent, I may have to reconsider the notion of selling it.

When I see a gun pulled in SL and pointed in my direction, and I have my force active, I usually use mind trick to blind the shooter. I don't want guns aimed at, period.

Maybe there needs to be an element of sexuality in the mix. The Mafia has their buxom, tanned babes and musclebound Adonises carrying around enough firearms to make Charlton Heston faint, thus invoking the American mental association between violence and masculinity.

And the Goreans, the other well organized RP group, well, you probably can tell where that statement's going.

So what do we need? Hot posthumans! Content creators could get behind this, making flexi mechanical tentacles that are, ahem, fully featured, and all other sorts of interesting prothetics. And the more literary minded among the SL Sci-Fi community could write stories about all the forbidden fun that can be had in free-fall. Speaking of that, the animators could start allowing people to live out those stories. Just make sure you don't break the immersion by having people's feet always pointing at the ground.

It won't be long before you won't be able to make enough sims with giant spaceships full of tricked out crew quarters with all the goodies in them to contain all the "role players".

Definable gravity would be so awesome! Circular orbital platforms like DS9 or the orbital wheel in 2001 where the 'floor' is the outer wall and the 'ceiling' the inner wall, Yes!!!!

I think you misunderstood. I was not advocating gunplay inside malls and such. I want to keep it in the sci-fi sims with the sim owner's blessing. And I want to use something like RPC or your Frag Foo as a standard so that it doesn't cause accidental griefing since the weapons will only affect the players.

I said *when* I was in the mafia meaning I am *not* in the mafia now.

I uhhhh also mentioned that RPC was probably a better choice because it is cheaper than your Frag Foo (which I have, btw).

I agree, centrifugal gravity would rule. Maybe even a free-fall sim where no one complains about push guns, because there's no other way to get around! Since having a sky, ground, or sim border in it would be awkward too, you could just have it so you wrapped around to the other side. Asteroids style.

But it's taken so long for Havok2 that it's probably better not to distract LL with even loftier goals.

Rabel, your idea of an Asteroids-style wraparound would be hilariously fun. It's got to be a future option for island sims or even blocks of island sims.
