In the latest MACLEAN'S magazine, Andrew Potter wrote:

It is probably no longer terribly useful to divide the world into "virtual" and "real" aspects, as the realm of atoms and the realm of bits become drawn into an integrated system of technologies, institutions, and cultural products.

He was referring to MMORPG's like WoW and Everquest, but of course it's equally true of worlds like Second Life.

Finally, a mainstream media* article with a theme other than "Woman Makes Real Money in Virtual World!"

Indeed, it's an admission that all those articles were silly - because the real/virtual distinction is, well, silly.

(Are telephone conversations real or virtual conversations?)

*MACLEAN'S is a Canadian weekly newsmagazine.

I can dig it. It's not unlike my own observation that SL is simply the latest in a long way of communication methods, and thus "it's only a game", "everything here is fake", etc, etc, are observations that could very well be applied to any other commonly-used method of communication, up to and including face-to-face speech.

And are letters real or virtual?

Not to mention friends. I've never understood the people who think of online friends as people who just sort of go away when you turn off the computer, or don't count as real friends, or something.

It's what they used for thousands of years, until, oh I don't know, I think 1997 is the last time I got one.

Well said troy, it was always nauseating how they went on and on like it is something new.

Hell shakespeare wrote and sold plays ~500 years ago, and that was as virtual as anything.
