I was looking for an old forum announcement I made almost two years ago, regarding the opening of the Brownstone building in Grignano, and found that post no longer exists. I have found posts I made earlier that are still there and one even mentions the fact that I am building the Brownstone and to watch for an announcement. But the announcement itself is gone.

I'm trying to dig up early records of activity in Nova Albion, the city regions, for the upcoming 2nd Anniversary and am bummed this particular announcement is missing. I've been taking it for granted that these old posts would continue to remain as handy reference material. So, my nostalgic, history-loving nature wants to shout from the top of Mt. G'al, "Back up your favorite forum posts and threads! Save them to your hard drives or print them out. They may not be here the next time you look."

The initial post itself wasn't real noteworthy, in fact I think I have a copy of the short announcement text I posted. What was valuable was the post I made after the event, documenting what had happened, and all the responses people contributed. During the opening, my mom had run in to the cafe very upset that she had lost the locket my birth dad, Mohses Jack, had given her. She had been wandering around the Forest of Kahruvel and hadn't noticed that it had gone missing.

All of the folks at the cafe opening ( I think it was 25 or so) teleported over to the forest and helped us look for it. I remember arriving at the Noyo telehub and seeing everyone fly up and over the ridge that separates Noyo from Rodeo. Quite a sight! We spent the next fifteen minutes or so scouring the area and had so many folks tromping through the forest that we destabalized that section of The Grid. The region winked out for a few moments and we were cast out temporarily. We all returned to continue the search and Loki Pico finally found it under one of the fallen stones on the bluff overlooking the inland sea.

A really great memory. I remember Temis Twilight, Annedroid Lily, Marcos Fonzarelli, Hank Ramos and Neo Rebus off the top of my head and there were so many others there I can't remember the names of. Ha! -- Fueltanker Cotton was at the cafe too and had rezzed a WWII tank out on the sidewalk! It sure would be nice to remember all the others who had been there.

If anyone reading this can shed some light on what else happened that day, or who else was there, please pipe in!

And back up those forum posts!

Around the time I joined Second Life, back when they were using the old forums, I believe the system suffered major data loss and/or cutoff at a certain point, probably due to migrating to a new system.

Might not be the problem, though.

If he doesn't find his way here on his own, I'll point Eggy toward this thread when I see him online.

I'm here. LL accidentally lost a few threads while trying to move them around, and also the entirety of the old scripting forum. But aside from that, everything should be in the Archive.

Thanks for the info. I remember that happening when the forums were overhauled. I could have sworn that I had seen that particular old announcement since then. Just wishful thinking I suppose.

Actually Eggy - more than a few threads were lost.

Ugh...

Sal, I have the original announcement by Haney Linden when the City Sims openedon a norecard in my inventory. Would that help you? I found it by searching the forums. I just tried doing the same thing now and found I couldn't get to the archived threads. I wonder what's changed.

How do you get to the archived threads now?

Thanks Ingrid. I snagged that notecard of yours from the stand you have next to the Miramare Infohub a few months back. That's not the announcement I was looking for. I was looking for a post I had made for the grand opening of The Brownstone (now The Brownstone West) in Grignano back in mid May of 2004. This was after Nova Albion had been discovered by Magellan and after the city land auctions. I think that announcement was one of the ones that was lost in the forum overhaul. There are some posts that I made prior to that that are still there, so it seems the loss is limited to a particular time frame or section of posts.

One can still access remaining archived threads a few ways. The easiest is to do a Search or Advanced search of all the forums and include keywords that you know are a part of the post you are looking for. The older archived threads (still reachable) will be at the end of the resulting list.

You can also find the link to the archived threads on the forum home page at:
http://forums.secondlife.com/index.php?

Scroll all the way to the bottom and you'll see the Archive link.

That page is divided into two sections. The top section will always show the list of Group Archived Threads. The bottom section gives you access to about 450 pages of archived threads from the regular forum sections.

I did a one word Search for the term "Albion" and found these two posts by Xenon Linden regarding Nova Albion:

/3/7c/11098/1.html

/3/8c/11284/1.html

I did a similar search for Brownstone and found this post:

/8/08/13917/1.html

But it's not the official thread I made back then of the grand opening, so it's missing all the good stuff that was posted after the event was over, as I mentioned above.

You can also use the Advanced Search link within the Search link to initiate a more customized search.

Needless to say, I've begun archiving threads that are important to me to my hard drive. I encourage others to do the same. I'm saving them as PDFs to preserve the look of the posts, including images folks posted.
