women as property, subject to the whims of men. a women that disobeys or dishonours their man given a severe corpereal punishment, even execution, outside of any due legal process.

is roleplaying gor similar or dissimiliar to roleplaying taliban occupied afghanistan?

Heh...it is an interesting parallel...and instutionalized misogyny is something which exists in the real world, not just under the Taliban, but in some American Christian groups as well that believe that the man is the head of the household, and that women should "submit" to their husbands, as well as in other cultures which value the woman less than the man, but which it would be non-PC to mention.

Nice troll btw. ;)

Many old cultures display similar misogyny.

They're found in Middle east, China, Japan, America, and likely Africa too ... likely just about everywhere. I wouldn't be quick to limit it to Taliban.

Pie also. The parallel falls down simply because Gorean roleplaying is just that - roleplaying. There is consent on both sides of the relationship. Even Taliban roleplaying would be different from life in Taliban society as, again, consent is implied in roleplaying.

I also get the sense that the poll might be a *little* bit...umm...skewed...towards affirming the question? :D

vonn neumann,

i would like to reiterate for you...

we are NOT comparing roleplaying of gor to RL taliban.
we are NOT comparing roleplaying of taliban to RL taliban

we ARE comparing roleplaying of slavery and misogony in leather straps to roleplaying of slavery and misogony in burkhas.

the poll is not skewed. #3, which is incidentally what i chose, clearly indicates that the reader finds the two to be dissimilar.

Ah thanks for that clarification Jauani. You are absolutely correct and I will have to sharpen my reading and comprehension skills :/ In that case then I guess they would be superficially similar. But unfortunately I already voted for pie!

This entire poll is inherently flawed because as Von Neumann iterated, it's ultimately about consent and choice. Gorean roleplay seems to imply submission and therefore consent. Secondly, it's virtual not physical i.e. the consenter can walk away at any time. Consent is often not a consideration afforded to the oppressed.

Yes, I suppose if you suspend disbelief with enough conviction, then the similarities are there. But I wouldn't get too hung up on it.

your entire post is inherently flawed because as i reiterated, this thread is comparing roleplay to roleplay.

reread and try again. :)

No, it's comparing role playing to role playing. So the poll is in fact, perfectly valid.

Let's stop this before it becomes an ugly thread, shall we? In my judgement the original post is an attempt to present an inflamitory topic (Gor) in a light that is almost guaranteed to start a flame war were it allowed to continue, a.k.a trolling. Trolling is very much not allowed on these forums, so I am going to send this thread to it's room without any supper.

Locked.

Edit: neglected to cite the guidelines before. Mea culpa.

Flaming, Spamming, Trolling – Flaming (posting a message that is intended to incite anger or directly attack a person or persons), Spamming (multiple posts of the same topic or discussion), and Trolling (a post with an intentionally contrary opinion written with the intent of inciting or getting argumentative opinions) are strongly discouraged. If you think your post might be over-reactive, or that it might fall into one of these definitions, please reconsider posting.[/quote[
