should people be able to sensor detect avatars on your land and then spam them? |

by spam them, i mean send them a notecard. that's just crazy, right? It's a difficult one. I am not a big fan of any spam like that, but then I can also appreciate that it's difficult for business owners to get a message across to their customers. I think cards detailing important info on the products you are obviously showing an interest in just by being there are more acceptable than 'adverts'. |

OK my bad, I just realised you meant YOUR OWN land. No, it's never acceptable, imo.

It should always be possible to block people on your land from being seen by scripts outside that parcel.

Great.
A few do something stupid (the spammers) and now you want to restrict everyone from having something useful. This is how you do it if you want to take SL from a fun toy world everyone builds together and transform it into a 3-d chat room. The proposal should be: No one linden can overturn another's ruling without mediation. and/or: Linden liasons should all be given stricter guidelines so thier decisions do not contradict one another. plus: Spamming - the act of sending any form of unwanted communication on a mass scale - should be clearly a violation of the TOS. Wait - it already is! _____________________

jillian, do you own any land in SL?
how would you like it if whenever someone came and visited you I sent them a notecard marketing my business from the parcel next door while they were on *your* land. i agree, let's not mess with SL over this, but this seems to obviously clear cut. |

Wait - it already is! But its not. At this time. According to the Lindens. And I don't think its restricting everyone from having something useful if its an option a land owner can turn off or not. I don't turn off Building on my land, I don't turn off outside scripts on my land, because I realize the need for people to be able to rez an object on it or use their AOs on it. I make a choice...as a land owner, to let people do that, its a choice I believe I have a right to have. So even though I have the option to restrict everyone on my land from building or running scripts...its not an option I exercise, and this would also be an option that I or anyone else could choose not to exercise if they didn't mind people using sensors from outside their parcel to target avatars on their parcel. The ability for sensors to target avatars on my land from outside my land is an option I have no control over. I don't have this option. So thusly...it gives someone else a marginal amount of control over the content presented on my land. And I don't think thats fair at all. |

You think it's clear cut? Ok, let me take away a few of your tools abecasue theyr'e being abused by a few and see how clear cut that is. I want the interactive, fully buildable world. I don't want a 3-d chat room. If I wanted that I'd go play TSO or There. Get the Lindens to do thier flipping job, not take away our tools! _____________________

Back that up. I can't because I would have to disclose information and private conversations between myself and Linden Labs employees in regards to an ongoing dispute between myself and an ad spammer that is abusing my parcel in this fashion and it is against the TOS for me to do so. If you contact me in world I would be happy to speak to you directly on the matter. But I cannot go into it here on the forums, I've already recieved a warning in that regard, and I try to stick to the rules. |

The way I see it, if YOU have something on YOUR land that gives YOUR visitors a notecard, that's fine.
When your neighbour has one which is misconfigured so it spams everyone who lands in a 100m radius of their 512 sq m plot, then that's wrong. If they won't rectify the problem, then it's AR'able as far as I'm concerned - and will be. I'm not a fan of spam in the first place - but assuming that it belongs to the land you're on, I don't mind it so much if it's something like a store directory and a landmark. Y'know, for those who make those notecard-givers, you CAN tell (via script) whether or not the avatar you're about to give that notecard to is actually on land you own.
It's called llOverMyLand and has a nice script wiki entry right here. This way, even if the giver's sensor range overlapped someone else's plot of land, you can tell if they are actually on your plot. But I guess this assumes those who write these kind of scripts give a damn... |

I really feel sorry for Suzanna because her problem is one that is inescapable. It's effectively griefing. @Suzanna Keep up with your conversations with the Lindens until it's resolved. We can't interfere but we can still wish you the best. |

Solution:
Put a sensor on YOUR land... and send that person a notecard explaining your complaints, get one/give one. Of course, this is the toned-down method. If it happened to me, I'd probably find a way to orbit the person everytime they went to their 16sqm plot to reset the script. Another possible solution, if you have friends with land surrounding his: Have all the neighbors explicitly ban him from their land, then watch him pinball around trying to get to his parcel through a 768m tall acces column ![]() Finally, I suppose you could mute the offender and ask your friends, visitors and customers to do the same. That should serve to block notecard spam from all other spammers the person has in-world as well. |
