Anything remotely interesting in the town hall?

Or was it full of more of the same vague non-answers we've come to know and love?

Anybody care to share some of what was said?

Yeah, it's interesting to see how everyone asks the same stupid questions over and over again, wasting the CEO's time with something that could have been handled by tech support monkeys

Conceptual Recap
05-19-2006 03:49
ok - I do agree that Philip was asked a lot of questions his staff could answer - I really think it's great he's willing to subject himself to *all* SL residents and hear it straight from us if you choose to share!

I thought he did a good job at veering the "keynote" question into a 1 to 2 minute nugget and getting back down to earth with the rest of us and listen to our questions - that ain't easy!

ok - as far as i can tell, I can only find a text transcript of the discussion from last month (April) - this is not a full transciption and best be called minutes or a "conceptual recap" if you will!

A lot of ground was covered so bear with me on this - I hope it's useful to some of you!

Voice is my current pet peeve at the moment - but don't let this bais the conversation!

ps. If a "..." is there - I wasn't able to grok the conversation - please excuse me for this!
  1. Open source - request for more open source involvement
  2. Copyright Infringement - DMCA "handles exactly as web sites do" "you request to have content taken down" "there is legal escalation" "[object] owner provides chain of accountability"
  3. Vision - "SL is as big as the Internet" "complexity [equals or exceeds what it takes to maintain the Internet today]" "job beyond one company" Philip has taken an action item to create a followup meeting on Linden Lab's vision.
  4. Advanced Content - ie. "chemical models" issues is with formats. Philip foresees "conversion [tools/scripts] to prim format"
  5. Cybercrime - "interrupting commerce on a web site is a federal crime" SL is looking for an equivalence model between SL and web sites. request to make names of offender public to discourage individuals in the future.
  6. Policy on Politics - campaign away!, encourage openness without violating freedom
  7. SL Use Program - "intensive communication with users" day workshops
  8. prim limit increases and new tree program - physics engine dependencies. do not want to impact framerate
  9. Linux - runs as fast as PC client. no date on when it will move out of alpha status
  10. new scripting - HTTP request feature "response in several hundred milliseconds"
  11. alternative interfaces - "we've done interesting human interface work" makes mention of new Nintendo controller "general vision is to expose interface" "make progress on this in the next few months"
  12. open source - "million of users" "need to contribute" "hang in there" "we're looking at something that is profoundly large"
  13. push weapons - "inconsistent with term of service" Philip takes an action item to investigate this further
  14. traffic programs - "eliminating traffic program got more positive feedback [than negative]" [editorial: i hear break away from web domain name park paradigm - yeay!]
  15. object-to-object communication - "shared object-to-object model" "no specific dates for release"
  16. boolean objects - related to LSL grammar. Philip takes an action item to address this offline
  17. glut in land market - "don't believe there is a glut" "5.78 L$/sqm"
  18. prim hair and clothing - "people now prefer prim har and clothing [over mesh]" "hardcore!" no commitment - "improvements on lighting [to be released]"
  19. lag - ...
  20. business users - business week article caused a influx of business users. "do you like the idea Nike and Coke invade SL?" "cannot imagine what the Nike and Cola's in the world...bring their existing content" "every company is expected to 'make their own way' 'prove their own value' [just like everyone else]"
  21. last names - moving forward on feature to create own last names [editorial: i think fixed last names is a good idea - you get to find your family members and cause a reunion :)]
  22. team grid content - "exclusive content for the team grid" "Linden Lab does not build content" [ie. they are a platform company] "[make sure its] reasonably protected"
  23. culture - "kingdom, democracy, anarchy, communism, or something else?" "free and open place" "all of the above" "at highest level...fundamentally open" "democracy doesn't capture that" "like the [culture of the] Internet"
  24. voice - "this Town Hall is great because of voice" "tie [voice] to objects" "concerns...don't want to alienate those who don't want to use voice" "we need to think positively about voice" [it's happening whether you like it or not]
  25. radio stations - ...
  26. Mac || TCP - "today we use UDP" "performance of intel-based macs is remarkable" Philip is "finally going to get myself a mac"
  27. concurrent script editing - akin web 2.0 word processors "that could be very cool" Philip takes an action item
  28. 31 object limit - ...
  29. single-user, disconnected mode - "it is a lot of work" "not on agenda right now" ability to edit objects while not connected and upload them. there is a reference to "P2P" in passing [allowing 2 people to collaborate on content creation for example]
  30. search - "we need to improve search capability" fees were imposed orginally to give postings "more meaning" something closer to "Google" is required.

a big thanks to everyone and anyone was more than encouraged to provide any additional feedback directly to Philip. The next town hall will be next month (date not announced).

I had a dream about this last night! First time I ever had a dream about SL, or at least such a vivid one as to remember it! (I will post it later on www.secondcitizen.com.)

I wasn't at it in SL, though. I wish they would tell us exactly how to listen to the dang thing.

Well, I was going by this, Nimrod:

"We'll provide a URL in advance of the meeting so if you want to listen in from the comfort of your own SL home you can."

The link was posted quite a bit later, and I didn't see that.

Anyway, not only would it be good to post a link, it would be good to tell us exactly what to do with it!

Ah, true, it was late. Usually (for future reference) you can paste the stream link into a browser URL, and if you click "Listen" at the top, your computer will open a program that will be able to play the stream. I did this for half of the metting, it worked fine for me. If it doesn't work, try downloading iTunes, and the stream should work with that. If you need more help, feel free to IM me, I'm usually not doing anything in SL. :D

From: paraphrased Philip
Vision - "SL is as big as the Internet" "complexity [equals or exceeds what it takes to maintain the Internet today]" "job beyond one company" Philip has taken an action item to create a followup meeting on Linden Lab's vision.

From: more paraphrasing
open source - "million of users" "need to contribute" "hang in there" "we're looking at something that is profoundly large"

From: Callum Linden in [thread=107375
this thread[/thread]]The "big one" - namely HTML on a prim may have to wait for a little while. Whilst it would be straightforward to put some sort of temporary solution together, we feel it's important to do this properly and not have to deal with poorly designed legacy functionality later on. This really means integration with another new feature that's in the pipeline - I can't tell you what it is as I'm not sure it's public knowledge yet, but it's really cool and gels very nicely with the HTML rendering.

From: Jeska in Robin's Blog
When these new plans are combined with useful features and tools currently in progress, the Second Life volunteer experience becomes even better. For example, the new group tools greatly ameliorates large-scale social networking and transitioning Second Life's support documentation from the clunky current wiki to a future knowledge management system makes it a lot easier to find the answers you're looking for.

From: from Cory's blog
How many people use the web versus gameworlds? (Being generous to the games, it's 20 to 1)...I still find the claim that innovation is happening in gameworlds somewhat challenging.
All of this posting over the past week is making me wonder what's coming down the pike.

One question: Could I not just paste this URL into my "music" place on my "About Land" tabs? Like I think you do for straming music?

Cause if I have to get an outside program to play this, then my computer probably can't handle both listening to an outside website AND being in SL.

Update: I have posted my dream on www.secondcitizen.com.

I am - something - SURPRISED? SAD? - That we was not more - OK we filled the sim - I tried to TP many times.. and no way.. then suddenly I was in..

1 - I dream of a day when LL have some sims that have POWER to let at least some 500 or more take part of a meeting,... special power ones..

2 - And its not in the middle of NIGHT! - It was at Ghost Hour and I must work day after.

3 - And yes.. it was a... Most are mentioned already...

/Tina - (I take screen shots to not lag the sim!)

PS Thanks LL that you have them - what? The meetings of course..

It's good to see Phillip touching on things like UI and search but it seems everything mentioned is "coming sometime" or "being looked at".

June town hall?

hey - thanks for the comments - I haven't popped in here for awhile!

I saw a blog post implying a town hall passed by earlier in the month - I missed it - doh! :-o

I agree - anyone have any comments as to any followup from May?

I'm poking around the forums and don't see mention and/or annoucement of it. a few questions:

(1) anyone manage to post a followup and/or recap? no hits via Google at first glance
(2) is there an official annoucement thread for town hall meetings (preferably RSS)
(3) when is the next town hall scheduled for July?

noticed I got a podcast for a town hall on July 7, 2006 - missed yet another one. anyone want to take on a recap the last two meetings?

What is the best way to stay up to date on calendar events without having to go in-world to check the postings?
