Discover Magazine's April 2005 issue features an article entitled "Virtual Law and Order", about the seeming lack of consistent law in online worlds, specifically SL. It features a bit of an interview with Nimrod Yaffle about his time in the cornfield, including pictures of the cornfield itself. The article goes on to talk about various attempts at an online-world-specific "Bill of Rights" and proposals for conflict resolution systems. Maybe it doesn't put SL in the most wonderful light, but it's still cool to see an article in such a popular magazine!

I'll grab a magazine when I see it on the stand, most likely someone will be able to answer it before then, but it's probably a yes. _____________________

This is a link to the future:
http://www.discover.com/issues/apr-06/ It will only work when the April issue's articles are put online, and then you will be able to view the SL mention. |

Why does a dude who broke the rules in a pretty crappy manner keep getting publicity?

Here's a rough scan of the article out of the April '06 Discover magazine, at least until they put the article online:

Why does a dude who broke the rules in a pretty crappy manner keep getting publicity? Because they have the cornfield. People who just get suspended wouldn't get the publicity. _____________________

I love the Linden comment that it's for white-collar crimes. Is a crime white-collar for the "skill level" of the crime or just how much money the one committing it has in SL?

Two things in name-particular that've constantly bugged me:
I enjoyed the read and think it'll be fascinating if more private islands, with their own emerging self-governance, come up with regional means of "discipline". I had forwarded ideas of notions in the Twilight Zone that would have been more fitting in a Stephen King story (a la Children of the Corn). Or you know, the subversive twist: corn eats people. I am still waiting for a suburban-looking town, where it's all idyllic and folks are jovial and smiling, but they're really monsters. the lot of them. _____________________

So-called cornfield. Pah! Now I'm even more sure it doesn't exist!

Why does a dude who broke the rules in a pretty crappy manner keep getting publicity? That's the way it always happens. When you watch the news, it's usually bad stuff, no? _____________________

And the fact that James Miller wrote "My Proposal for a Resident Dispute Resolution System" over a year ago--not so recently. Still, it's cool to see some well-known SL personalities listed in a publication whose circulation spans a pretty broad sector of the U.S. population. (And at least there's no overt talk in this article of "make big bucks!" or "have wild, hot cyber-sex!" as so many other mainstream media mentions of SL feature. )_____________________
