From: Catheine Linden LEGO MINDSTORMS invites the Second Life community to create the next Big Robot on Campus.
WHAT IS THIS?
Lego Mindstorms' Big Robot on Campus is a program of events around the launch of the next generation of LEGO MINDSTORMS, the consumer robotics tool set that challenges LEGO fans ages 10 and up to build the robot of their imagination. The kickoff event is at Wired Magazine headquarters in San Francisco next week, and video from it will be streamed live into Second Life. This event will feature real life MINDSTORMS robots created by Wired staff, and Wired staffers discussing their creations. For the rest see /3/a9/120810/1.htmlWhat's the news on this Lego event? Seems like short notice.

I wasn't involved in putting together the Lego project, but I'm helping hand out the kits this weekend for Hank - here's what's in the notecard you get along with the building parts: From: notecard Thank you for registering for the LEGO MINDSTORMS Big Robot on Campus event in Second Life! We're excited to see what you can create. Here is your started kit for construction of your own LEGO MINDSTORMS robot in Second Life. This contains a simple, complete, Alpha Rex model, and most of the building block pieces that were used to make it. All are non-transferrable, but fully modifiable and copyable. There is nothing limiting you to the pieces in this kit. Feel free to build, create, and add your own LEGO pieces to your robot. We also encourage you to add interactivity - the kit contains no scripts, but the real MINDSTORMS robots have a great deal of ability to interact with their users and environments, much of which could be wonderfully implemented within Second Life. You can find a great deal of inspiration for your work on the official LEGO MINDSTORMS website: Main site: http://www.mindstorms.com Information about the RL Alpha Rex: http://mindstorms.lego.com/Overview/ Gallery of projects using the RL Alpha Rex: http://mindstorms.lego.com/MeetMDP/ Bring your finished work to the Second Life Big Robot on Campus event - this will be on Supernova at 3:00 PM Second Life Time on Thursday, July 20th. In case you need incentive beyond the desire to create and display an awesome robot, attendance at this event qualifies you for a drawing to win one of 50 real life FREE LEGO MINDSTORMS T-shirts. If you have questions about this event, please contact Hank Hoodoo. We look forward to seeing what you can do! Bascially, its an open building contest with a theme, and premade Lego building parts to start with...but certainly not limited to those. If you're anything like me, toys like Legos got me started on the path that led me to SL - its pretty neat to see it come full circle, and REALLY cool to see Lego take an interest in SL. This is open to all, so join the group and shoot me an IM, I'll get the building kit folder on you ASAP

LEGO reminds me of a lot of things in life.. A bunch of red legos bricks placed at my land as a joke - and a stupid stupid aggressive dreamland employed made me move to Otherland... that was a good thing )) Legos was al over my and my brothers rooms when we was childs....and al grown up stepped on them barefeeted at nights and screamed a lot of not so nice words... Legos was the first way I learned to build... I use it now in SL ) Lego are from Scandinavia - where I live.. Lego from the south part - Denmark - I live north of Denmark - In Sweden (IKEA, H&M, VOLVO, ASEA. ERICSSON and more..).. LEGOs are as prims.... and I told a jounalist that write a story about Second Life (My EXAKT store and I are in the story of course.-DD) -in one of Swedens largest computer Magazines to compare prims with Legos... ))) /Tina - That have seen EXAKT LEGOs in stores in China to....no fakes...

It is very interesting that Lego Mindstorm products are being promoted in SL in this way. My husband is starting his second year of coaching a First Lego League team at our kids' elementary school, and he just bought his own copy of the newest Mindstorm kit (which arrived last week); it's quite an amazing product. I suspect the SL version won't come close to being as cool as the RL thing is, but I'm curious to see how the SL competition goes.

I think Cubey Terra had some connection with Legos.
Being in San Francisco playing with Legos sounds like a nice way to spend some time.

Being in San Francisco playing with Legos sounds like a nice way to spend some time. I'm not connected with LEGO (psst it's not "Legos"... singular only, sort of like "moose" and not "mooses" , but I did contribute to a Mindstorms book published by Syngress few years back. Fun stuff. Addictive. Pointless. Just like SL! Actually, I'm not surprised that LEGO is promoting the new Minstorms stuff in SL. There are a lot of similarities between creating things in SL and creating Mindstorms robots.
