This year, they're determining the best game by how many lindens it makes? Oh isn't that just lovely. Instead of encouraging innovative ideas, they take a bunch of old ideas that've been running for up to two years and then look at which one makes the most cash? This can be rigged you know. Just cooperate with a dozen people to constantly recycle money.

And it hardly seems like a game developer's contest and more like a marketing agency contest. Who can convince people that their crap is better than the other crap? And heavens forbid that some other games sthat the Lindens never noticed get missed.

This is just so typical. It seems that every year, the Lindens are more and more clueless. The first contest encouraged innovation and Tringo came out of it. Sure Tringo's not that great of a game because it's been overdone, but you have to admit, it's a pretty freaking clever game.

The second year, they encouraged innovation again. Very shortly after Primmies was announced as the winner, SL was patched in a way that introduced a bug that made Primmies completely invalid. It's been half a year and that bug still hasn't been fixed. The very same bug is messing up some of my owns creations.

And now... we don't even get innovation. It's just a marketing contest. Who died and let the idiot marketing guys be king? Seriously! The only thing Marketing is good for is lieing to the general public. Heck, they even TEACH you how to lie in marketing classes.

I'm constantly waiting for Linden Labs to get a clue, but they're not. As such, I am continuing my boycot of the Lindex and will continue using Paypal only to bypass the entire economy of SL, as I have no confidence in the "Government" here.

Hey, Linden Labs really is a government, where can I go to place a motion of non-confidence?

What other metric do you think would be fair for the participants?

There are 8 games out there right now, 4 will be the "winners". It's fairly easy to pick out atleast 3 of those winners. Castle Wars, Boogie, and Tech Warfare had pretty big audiences tonight. The other slot is pretty much between Danger Zone (which is awesome if people try it), Blox Sumo, and SLictionary. Darklife isn't done yet so I think they automatically forfit (had to be done by the 20th) and The Collective is really dropping the ball, their space feels like a mall, 2 vendor walls and a 3rd wall that sells "the collective" products. Unless they put on some publicized demo's and clean up the vendor junk they won't really stand a chance. Plus what's up with the game giving you experience for shopping in stores owned by the retailers, that's alittle icky.

Someone or someones making a utterly subjective and insupportable judgment of goodness. The world isn't fair and "good" is not quantifiable.

If we based all evaluations on "objective" criteria, Titanic would be the best film ever made, McDonalds would be the height of culinary arts, Exxon would be the best corporation ever, Michael Jackson would be the penultimate musician, and Baywatch would represent the pinnacle of television's accomplishments. Using this approach in SL would likely mean that Club Elite(?) in Federal would be a contentder for the best that the vWorld has to offer with "yard sales" pulling a close second.

There are less silly methods of selection.

I don't know, it seems reasonable with games. They aren't judging good, really. They are judging how many people will pay to play a certain game. Obviously the games game can be gamed, but what are ya gonna do?

Dark life!

My winners:

1] Dark Life
2] Dark Life
3] Dark Life

You can play the game at 'Navora' and see the new look at that game show.

To bad RL has shown his ugly face and thats why they couldnt finish it as soon as they wanted. Anyway Mark Busch and Crash Prefect did a great job (with the warriors and wizzards behind the scenes) and they got their priorities straight.

* killing monsters again..

Type and read you later!

Not in mine. I teach people to look for what is genuinely original in their products / services and then to build a message that conveys that originality to the public that cares about it. That may be because I come from an arts marketing background.

Anyone who knows much about marketing, though, should know that it is always more cost-effective to keep an old customer than to woo a new one.

I must admit that I was a bit surprised, when I went around Arcadia, that the games seem to be charging different prices as well.

It would basically mean that, if I tried all of them once, I've put whichever one was most expensive closer to winning than all the others, even if I liked it least.

How were the previous contests judged?
By a selected panel of experts or by anonymous community voting?

the whole game dev thing this year is a joke.

The objective is not to develop a game, but to see how much L can be made from an allready developed game. Makes good marketing. You can get rich in SL you know.

Thanks for the feedback on The Collective. =)

Based on the feedback we've gotten (people thinking it was basically just a shopping game), we've changed the layout in Arcadia quite a bit today - removing the extraneous shops completely! It now focuses on the actual core of the game, the Trading Card Game.

For those interested, I'm hosting an information session/duel session in about 50 minutes in Arcadia, where I'll also be introducing a couple of contests we'll be running with some great prize pots (including a L$2,500 prize for the winner of a tournament this weekend).

As for a public demo thing, an NPC vs NPC battle is currently being scripted using the AI that is used by our current NPCs so people can more accurately see the Trading Card Game in Arcadia.

Thanks for the feedback, and good luck to the other Arcadia participants!
