Hi, I'm a nubie just getting oriented with an observation. On a notecard somewhere I read of several interesting places to visit. The first one, the Upside Down house was wonderful! The next one (a reconstruction of the Parthenon) seemed to have vanished from the original location, to be replaced by a very tranquill residential area. I did a search and found another location (the search box had a pretty picture of the parthenon); but, when I teleported there I was disappointed to find nothing but a very tacky commercial site. The same disappointment happened when I teleported to another advertised attraction. I was also disappointed that the Alice in Wonderland site seems to have never reached fruition (I am guessing that the creater just ran out of steam).
Has something changed in sl so that these wonderfully creative people are less able to put totally fun and non-commercial sites out there for the delight of residents? Maybe the cost of real estate is too high. Could we petition Linden Labs to provide a "non-commercial" or "non-profit" zoning category for high quality, fun sites (parks, museums, etc.). On the other hand, I am totally awed by the non-commercial sites that are there (I just got back from the NASA-like site, mind boggling!)
Cheerio, Craig

Hi Craig, welcome to SL. Sorry to pop your bubble, but SL is becoming more and more oriented toward purely commercial ventures, be it mall, casinos, clubs, games...
those of us that got into SL purely for fun, building, scripting, are a vanishing minority. This has become a lot worse since the opening of the registration process to anyone.
That said, you can still find incredible buildings and sims around. It just keeps getting harder to find them amisdt all the crap.

Simple answer: The notecard is old. SL is constantly changing. I have 3 years of dead landmarks to nonexistant places.

From: Pratyeka Muromachi Hi Craig, welcome to SL. Sorry to pop your bubble, but SL is becoming more and more oriented toward purely commercial ventures, be it mall, casinos, clubs, games... Nope. There are still lots of wonderful builds and builders that don't care about money or "material" things. Just have to look for them. Only thing constant about SL is the change.

SL is like dessert. Take a piece when you see it or do without.

Try the private sims instead of the mainland. There's always something to see on someone's private sim. I like spending hours just sim hopping, seeing what that person built.

Well, since one owns their creations in SL, I'm sure all the vanished sites where stored on people's hard drives where they can be recreated in other programs or reloaded into SL at some future date.

was an old card...

Hi Craig, welcome to SL, or whats left of it, lol, sorry i can be sardonic at times, Linden Labs used to have a program that gave bonus Lindens ($) for traffic. This enabled creators to create for the fun of it.. and be able to offset some of the highest charges in the industry, in land fees. Now that there is no bonus for traffic, or any replacement program thereof, SL has turned into rentals, escort services and malls. Theres a few wonderful places left, Parrot Island for sure..but see em quick. Unless your just fantastically well to do and dont work and have time to create on your own dime theres not much hope these wonderful places will exist in SL.
I for one would love to see donation buckets placed in thes areas that still exist, so we could as good SL'ians donate to see that they survive, and shame on you Linden Labs you should be too.
The card you read was an older card, but serves to show us what weve already lost. Best wishes for a fun time in SL Craig...theres exceptionally wonderful ppl here...may all your fantasies come true ...

Cheerio, Craig Things come and things go and things come again. For a limited time only, you can try Tiny Little Eastonville in the sim of Bishop at 84, 22, 56. When you've seen all that you can see there, there's a set of inter-sim, Stargate style transport rings that will take you to a 1/4 sim park area with a beach that's open to the public unless I happen to be actively entertaining friends on the beach. (Get there soon because Eastonville is going to have to be taken up and relocated to Meins before my next tier payment rolls around.) But there *are* still cool things to see in SL and places to go. I saw them when I was starting out, and my friends and I are still trying to make sure that they're there for people to see now. If you like them, tips aren't needed, but you can always plus rate the builder, I'm sure she'd apreceate it.

Funny... I remember back when dwell was around, the places that profited most from Dwell was Malls, Clubs, and Escort Services. But the point does remain that we should try our hardest to support what we love in Second Life... wether it means L$ tips or even just simple praise.

You should check out the ivory tower, just simply for how neat it looks as well as it is helpful on building and understanding things around you a bit better

Yes, if they are creative AND have financial backers OR a willingness to pay out of pocket OR a line of innovative flexi (L$++) women's clothing, skins ($L++), and hair to fund their exploits, their stuff is out there... --Matt Poor Project Builder, Starving Artiste

From: SuezanneC Baskerville I'm sure all the vanished sites where stored on people's hard drives Now there's a feature SL is (still) sorely lacking. Can you imagine all the wonderful things that have disappeared, that could be resurrected if such a system in place? But of course, the fluff and flair in recent updates FAR outweighs the need for an item save system. This reminds me though... one place I used to love going to, which was removed, has since made at least one reappearance: Gravity Space Station. Used to really love that place... -Ghoti (currently searching for a good dance club like Gravity, with live DJs and such, feel free to IM suggestions)

I am one of those who still try to provide a place for people to enjoy. SL needs places to enjoy, play and explore and with the dwell removal was almost forced to turn Fairytale Island into yet another commerical venue but with help and many IMs pleading for it to return, I did so. When I tore the isle up and was going to have to go to renting it out to support it, it tore my heart out and I sat here crying over what seemed like a loss of an old friend. I've had this isle since Oct 27, 2004 and from its beginning it was meant to be a place everyone could come and enjoy and even the thought that it could no longer be there for that purpose killed me.
So yes its rough to keep things open for the public to enjoy but at Fairytale Island, but I will do my best to keep it there because places to play and explore are becoming something we see less and less of of in here and we so deperately need times to get away and relax even in SL.

From: Craig Hilbert Has something changed in sl so that these wonderfully creative people are less able to put totally fun and non-commercial sites out there for the delight of residents? Less able? No. From: someone Maybe the cost of real estate is too high. Could we petition Linden Labs to provide a "non-commercial" or "non-profit" zoning category for high quality, fun sites (parks, museums, etc.). Sure. But then, you could petition them to do anything, like cut Premium subscription costs in half or change their company's name to Candy Apple Enterprises. Be advised, though, that there is no good way to pick which sites would qualify. Any rating system based on objective criteria or player judgements will be manipulated to the point where places are mis-rated more often than not, and any ratings handed out by a fixed panel of Linden judges will be accused of rampant bias.

Suezanne, How does one store a sl creation on one's own hard drive? I thought stuff in sl was on a sl server. In what format would a sl object be downloaded? Craig From: SuezanneC Baskerville Well, since one owns their creations in SL, I'm sure all the vanished sites where stored on people's hard drives where they can be recreated in other programs or reloaded into SL at some future date.
