Well, here I go again with another crazy, just about unfeasible one But I have seen it in other MMOs. Since I haven't seen it on the forums, and searched it once or twice under different credentials, what would everyone think about free snapshots (not for residents), but not just that, the objects have to take the snapshots and sent them to other objects to view (grid-wide o.0)!? This would facilitate so many more things. New and better security, more powerful media, and maybe a way to expose different people and their ways. OK want an example? - Guy makes camera, puts script in the thing, sets to take snapshot every .5 seconds (.2 is live... I think, but maybe that’s a bit much on the system ), sets object to feed pictures to his other object still in the same sim (or maybe 10 sims away in his skybox o.0), he can watch that spot, see who goes by, while the picture changes every .5 seconds because the object takes the snapshot. Great for security? To see who’s at your door, utoh, someone griefed your house, well you know who it is! Maybe even a way to save/download this stream to SL for future viewing? That would work against some of the Furries' homes being griefed at the moment (lets take a moment of silence for them....), With the objects taking the pictures and then saving them to some SL video cache to be viewed later, you have rock-hard substantiation of who had done stuff to your home. - Media, imagine... anchor men/woman people! Broadcasted to TVs around the grid! People making their own cartoons, selling their own movies, hosting news casts, exposing griefers or even broadcasting about issues in-world like the whole "yard sale crisis"... saying- this person and this yard sale at this location has been selling freebees or w/e- bringing the SL economy up again, crush bogus yard-sales! SO many possibilities - You find someone of a whole group of people selling things at a yard sell, the things are freebees, you want to get at the masses about this, (and if this is implemented, I am sure everyone would want a TV) so you get an object to tape you and then send it grid-wide! - Movie making, everyone will be able to make their own- crappy or happy- movie that they can send on different channels, which the TVs would be able to be changed to and tune into. Oh of course there would be set precincts, like the pictures the objects take cannot be downloaded to a computer and the pictures couldn't be taken' into ones inventory, only into the objects inventory, etc [lindens can think of the rest]. But resident picture taking would be the same old 10L fee. I know that SL, at its current crumbling state, will not be able to withstand this type of mass load yet, but soon it should be (if ever). Just throw'n the idea out there, maybe in a year (or three) this could happen. Just saying it would be great to have, make SL easier for a lot of people [and harder for a lot of people]. Hopes? Thoughts? Flames? Ideas? Fantasies? Hate? Disagreement? Post down there please.

It's a nice idea. You're right in saying that the grid as it stands would never be able to support such a load. But who knows, perhaps a script delay of one second per script-taken picture, and a maximum size of 128 by 128 (or better, smaller) for the texture/snapshot created by the script-taken picture, and it could be good.

In a word, no.
This relies on objects taking snapshots-- which would mean the sim would have to take snapshots. This would mean the sim would need to be able to render things, which would require more load, and graphics cards for every sim.
And that doesn't touch upon adding assets to the asset server with a script.
I look forward to never seeing this feature.
Have a nice day.

Do you hear that sound, Tre Giles? That was the server crashing under the weight of millions of pictures being funneled through the asset server at 2 per second. It's not a pretty sound. It includes people screaming for the blood of ANYONE involved with whatever kicked them out fo the grid. Ok. It's a good idea. Not that the idea is good, but that it's good to have ideas. perhaps if it was done through an outside system fully client side? Using distributed filesharing to pull it off...

I look forward to seeing you using this feature when its used years from now, if you are still playing the game (or it hasn't been destroyed), then laughing in your face when I show you this thread. Oh... and have a nice day too.

Nice, maybe it could be done like that. *looks at LL and how they are doing*.... yeah.... may take a while thou
