Question regarding vehicle travel

I very much like traveling from place to place by vehicle. The view is great.

My question is: With all the issues of security, privacy, ejections, full sims, etc. Is there some way of being able to just *cross* the sim without running afoul of any of those issues?

Maybe there is some minimum altitude at which unhampered flight is possible? (sad if it has to be so high that you won't see anything on the ground). But if it comes to that...

It would be sad for those like me if someday due to all the security measures the grid achieve some form of checkerboard where it becomes impossible to get anywhere because everything's blocked.

While we're here, perhaps LL can add a mini-map tinting feature that will color code land (maybe give it a reddish tint) that will indicate security settings.

In order to stay away from security scripts you would have to fly at 800 meters or higher. This would not help you with the problem crossing sim boundries though. Also there is no view.

I understand your frustrations and was a member of the "free" flight movement that got crushed by the "privacy" residents. These residents want to control their airspace from ground to infinity. Luck for us the higest build is 660 meters? and add 100 meters since that seems to be the max range of security scripts. I added 40 for safety purposes.

I dont think that Linden Labs will do anything about the map. I have given up flight because of what you have written. It is just not worth it.

I find that flying at 50m usually makes me pretty safe on the mainland, if I pay attention to go around the few large builds. There's the odd arsehole with a security orb which gives me ten seconds but I'm usually way out of the line of fire by then. The only thing is, I usually have draw distance at 64m, which means that I, er, can't see much of the landscape at all.

Max Build Height = 768m
Few builds are higher than this because once in place they can't be repositioned.
Max Object Height = 4096m
Once crossing this altitude the object (not attachments) is considered off-world.

A good safe range is around 800-900 if you want to avoid instant-trigger security scripts.

Abuse report anyone who ejects you out of your vehicle without warning. Let LL know there's people out there who really do want to get around the old fashioned way sometimes.

I realize people want their privacy and fully support better privacy controls (which is probably the answer to this situation: make better privacy controls and outlaw security scripts), but there's no reason to instantly eject someone when all their trying to do is fly by.

So not to confuse newbies, vehicles you are in CAN go above 4096m. I have flown up to about 10,000m in my shadow before I got bored with the concept (nothing to see).

Average TPers only work to 300m and this is what most use to get up and down. Better (and more expensive) are out there and new scritps happen everyday.

The 800-900 range that Burke suggests is a good range for full out flight.

Just cruising, anything over 50m is "fairly" safe. And you can always just follow Linden Raods (even in flight) to avoid the majority. Not as free-feeling, but safer.

Sorry but AR's are at best pointless at least for the "unwashed masses". I am hoping that the Lindens will see these messages and do something.

About the security scrips it is about control. I admit to having one and using it but it works only on selected targets. I have to input the residents name in the target list to have them affected. Also it has a very limited range. I think that some insecure people like to cause trouble for others just because they can. They are called griefers and they are out there. Just because something is ok with the TOS does not mean it is the polite or correct thing to do.

I will continue let the SL forum community know about my sadness over my loss of flight. It is not griefing but letting Linden Labs remember that some residents are online not to build, script or have "cyber sex".

The ARs may seem pointless because you get no instant results and maybe you rarely get any results at all. But, the hope is if enough people AR this, the more LL will notice and hopefully do something about it. People shouldn't abuse the AR system, but getting dumped from your vehicle for no reason when your flying by a structure that is probably unrezzed (and probably no one's even home) is AR worthy in my opinion.

Staying at 1000+ is easy enough. Not much to see but if it works I'm happy.

Thanks guys.

I only bother with flying over 850 if I'm in the mood to "travel".

Otherwise I stay close to the ground and try to stick to roads and other Linden owned land - or "mall hop", sticking with places that are obviously meant for the general public to be. This allows for a certain, failry safe exploration of the grid.

Eject is a legal operation BUILT INTO LAND TOOLS. Deal with people ejecting you because unless they retool land management completely (or extend ban up to max height as I proposed) then it will be a sript ejecting you. Using a legitimate Linden created tool.

edit: driving along the roads gives the best views imo..and its onlt the Lindens to blame for sim crossings :D

I usually find that if I'm in a hurry to cross the grid, popping up to just above cloud level (250 meters or so) tends to avoid 95% of the builds and scripted annoyances in Second Life. You still can't see much from that altitude, but the clouds at least give you a feeling of motion you don't get when flying at perfectly safe altitudes like 800 meters. Adjust altitude upward when flying over tall sims, such as the mountainous snow sims of the mainland.

If you're looking to travel far without constantly adjusting your heading, I recommend aiming for the midpoint of sim borders. Despite improvements in border crossing, hitting the corner where four sims meet can still much up your navigation or even send your or your vehicle into limbo, requiring a reboot. The easy way to achieve this is to follow cardinal directions to your destination: use only north-south or east-west travel directions. You can also set yourself on a forty-five-degree heading and try to trace a path through the midpoints of the sims as you go. This requires a bit more skill, but gets you to your destination quicker.

If I'm sightseeing, I find that the big key here is to slow the heck down. For one thing, you won't see much when traveling fast at low altitudes. Even on a good network connection, you can easily pass right through a sim before anything has a chance to download and rez if you're going too fast. You'll also have more time to see upcoming obstacles so you can steer clear.

In addition to roads and obvious public areas like malls, following waterways is another good way to avoid running afoul of scripts and private land parcels. In some areas, like the deep river canyon around Enceladus, it's also a great test of your piloting skills. Popping over the top of a dam and making a nosedive for the water on the downstream side impresses the locals, too, or at least gets them calling the FAA to complain.

Yes I know it's legal.

I was only asking if there was a way of crossing such sims (and not landing in them) because such security measures can interrupt long-distance flights.

Linden Labs made a rather *extensive* set of vehicle handling functions, it would be a terrible waste and shame if sim security was such that vehicles can't be used for long distance travel.

Not to mention the sight of well made vehicles crossing the sky is artistically romantic.

For reference, at maximum speed, a vehicle can cross a sim in 2 seconds.

Its a balance of security and privacy (not to mention land rights) and 'open air space' which technically have to rights over owned land.

I'm in support of a building limit high ban line system. It will tell you that you can't pass that area, and not tp you home.

Have always agreed with you on this. It is the unknown places that ban you that piss me off. Would rather run into a wall that get a security warning script!

Get my long distance teleporter from the store 500m above Avalon Lagoon (the big crater at the south of LostFurest dAlliez) after using it to get up there. It's like 5 linden, IIRC, and full rights.
