Nope. Its still a dial up service, they just add software that caches more images and does some other small performance tweaks that doesn't actually increase the amount of data you can receive via your phone modem. Note how they tell you that downloading files is not faster with this service. Its probably worth it for viewing web sites, but it won't do a thing for SL. Sorry

As far as I know, SL will still work on a dialup connection, though it will be incredibly slow and may place an extra burden on the simulator due to increased packet retransmissions.
If you can stay in the same sim all the time, everything will be cached. If you also don't expect to build stuff or play fast-paced games, well, I guess you will still be able to fire off IMs in an emergency, or give people inventory items... _____________________

Thanks to everyone, just trying to find out for a very good friend of mine who is moving and may not have access to cable internet or DSL service and still wants to be in SL.

I worked with a newbie who came thought Orientation Island ok on dial up and was fairly ok on Help Island, but he decided to try the mainland and couldn't move. Of course, he also went to the WA, which is a lag fest on a good day, so YMMV. I've done dial up myself a few times when my DSL went down for days and could rez into my home but could barely move. I was able to fly to the two things I needed to fix for a customer and take care of IM's, but SL was pretty much like trying to drive in very heavy fog where your top speed is 5 mph.

Dial-UP = Crap
"High-Speed" Dial-Up = Gimmick/Trickery with Cache Satellite Broadband = Only good for web browsing and E-mail. Only DSL and Cable Broadband are any good for gaming/SL. Dial-Up is just too slow, and "High-Speed" Dial-up uses advanced caching, meaning you're still connected at the same data rate as regular Dial-Up (ISPs shouldn't be charging for it). Satellite has HUGE pings, and you are also limited to how much data you can recieve per month. Exceed taht and they'll throttle your connection down to roughly dial-up speeds or LESS. If you can't get DSL or Cable internet, then see if you have any neighbors within a quarter mile that you have line-of-sight to. Then see if you can share their cable bill and pick up a wireless router and a Cantenna. |

Just do a how-to lookup and build one for a fraction of the price. _____________________

Exceed taht and they'll throttle your connection down to roughly dial-up speeds or LESS. For the record, *every* broadband service in Australia is like that. This is something a lot of people in teh US fail to understand; some of us need to pay for data transmission! I've worked with the wholesale data price list in this country too.. even with capping, the only way the companies can make money is if most users don't use anywhere near the full cap. |

I 2nd the Cantenna thing. A lot of people with wireless dont realize how open it is. If they knew how to secure it, it wouldnt be so bad. I cant count how many times I've driven around with my laptop & a wireless card & was able to hop onto someone's internet connection.
