Well if I made pre-fabs I'd do it the same way. Its to allow people to create multiple copies, incase it goes missing. You can't apply both settings otherwise people could just sell infinate copies of your work.

You can usually check the permissions before you buy anything, and you should find out especially if you intend to sell it once you're done with it.

Don't feel bad, I still don't understand why the permission system works the way it does. Of course that statement only applies when it IS working at least the way LL intends it to. In all fairness, that's around eighty percent of the time.

The primary reason houses tend to be no transfer is that many people accidentally unlink them (or intentionally unlink to modify) and sometimes when you totally bollock it up it is easiest to just delete the evidence and start fresh with a new copy. Most creators will happily do versions that are transfer ok/no copy, just ask if you aren't sure or the permissions aren't clear.

I make and sell prefabs, this makes me an expert at house permissions. ;)

I use to alywas make my houses transfer, now i have swicthed to cop/no transfer for the reasons above, mostly modification and back up copies. Also because if its not copy you cnt even copy one peice to modify/add to the house, which can be really frusterating. People would ask me for the textures (many of which are my personal collection) to texture additions to their house. I decided i would much rather give them a copy/mod prim with the texture than the actual texture, less of a risk of it being stolen.

Bingo! - I don’t know who you bought from but this is very common. I personally sell mine copy/mod/no transfer due to the reasons Isablan & Barnes mentioned. It's very common for a customer to redecorate a prefab (wouldn’t be "home" without that personal touch) and usually make at least one mistake. (most of us are human, right?) Now instead of receiving IM's filling my inbox saying "I messed up, can I have another free copy?" it is far simpler to make them copy, so all they have to do is pull a clean replacement out of their inventory. And as all know, if you can copy and resell something, you can scam the original seller! (Which is not good for us trying to pay for our Ford Pinto's!)

Now I don’t know who you bought from, nor what their policies are, but most builders will sell a copy/no-mod/transfer version upon request. (If you contact the seller, he may give you one [for free?] that you can re-mod, then sell on your land.)

None the less, this is a common practice for most builders in SL - Clothing is another story though, don't get me started on non-copy clothing. ;)
