If you were planning on cancelling your account what would you do with your (first) land, transferable items of value, and lindens?
Do you sell everything and cash out, give them to your SL friends, or donate everything to a worthy SL cause (and which one, if there are any)?
If you'd signed up for an annual membership, would you log in every week (or month) to cash out or give away your stipend until your membership expired?

I put all my stuff in a pile, and burn it.

I'd give it all to me! Just kidding, I'd probably give stuff to The Shelter or New Citizens Inc.

1) Give my shoes and clothing to the homeless.
2) Link all of my weapons into a transferable, Katamari-like ball, and leave it in the weapons testing sandbox for all of the griefers to fight over.
3) Give anything poofy and sparkly (of which I have very little) to the furries, 'cause they're just so darn cuddly! ;P
4) Donate my L$ to the SL Explorers, as they have treated me very well, and deserve every penny!

The friends I have had, the close ones, that have left, have given me their transferable things. In one case, that included the cash, in the other it did not. I presume the latter sold their Lindens on the exchange (or equiv).
If I ever leave SL, I will either bequest the items I have created to someone who may continue to sell them, or set them all out as freebies at whatever place seems reasonable. I hope its a long time in coming.

Sell my land to break even, then sell all my items / products, and give the cash to RFL.

Well, I have 3 major assets/businesses in SL : * the BDSM Guide, which I would probably either sell as a business to someone else, or release under a CC licence so that anyone could use the content in future. * the CARP area, which I would try to transfer to another leader so that CARP could live on. * my islands, which I would sell to recoup the money I paid for them. My first sell offers would go to the residents currently living on them. If they turned it down, I'd probably refund their money and give them time to leave before selling the sims on.
All in all : 1) get back the money I put in, plus a healthy profit. 2) donate the rest to the community.

If I were leaving SL: I would donate all of my land (79,872m ) to a charity auction such as RFL. As for transferable inventory items, I think it would be fun to dress up as a fairy (complete with sparkly little particle wings and a magic wand) and flit around Welcome Island or Ahern and drop them on those in need. Really spectacular items could be auctioned off for charity as well. Items that are not transferable are still suitable for rezzing in friends homes and places of business (providing auto-return isn't enabled) until such time that they have to be disposed of when the land is sold, re-grouped or redecorated. I wouldn't feel right about wholesale deletion of items if I even had an inkling that they could be utilized or enjoyed by others. My inventory contains over 20,000 items, so I'd be entertained for quite awhile.

A friend of mine left a while back, shortly after all the kids came flooding in on unverified freebie accounts. He gave me most of his cash, which wasn't that much, with instructions to use it to offset rent for his SL mate (He and his mate were staying on one floor in one of my homes, as my guests). He gave me the few transferrable items that were worth bothering with. He owned no land, so after that he left, leaving his account technically active, in case he ever changed his mind and wished to return.
As of now, he's checking in sporadically to collect stipend and to transfer any funds from his last remaining vendor's sales to me. Maybe he will return, some day.
If I ever left... I'd sell my private island holdings, most likely to a friend, or back to the sim owner, who is a friend. I'd give most of my transferrable items to friends. I'd leave several of my non-transferrable objects with my Companion, who has edit rights on my stuff, and could therefore still use them. Then I'd cash out my L$ and leave.
More likely, I'll end up leaving because I am locked out by ever-increasing hardware requirements. If that happens, I'll try to borrow access to someone elses computer to shut my stuff down. If I can't, I'll sell my Lindens and write the rest off.

Leaving...
07-27-2006 13:11
If I were leaving, first I'd go to an unowned expanse of land and mope for an hour.
Then, I'd start crying and shaking my fist at the sky shouting "YOU DID THIS TO MEEE GOD! WHAT DID I EVER DO TO YOU!?!? WHY MUST YOU TORTURE ME SOOOOO???"
Then I'd get all angry and stomp my feet and transfer the blame to the Lindens. I'd go into forums and post all kinds of rude remarks about their programming abilities, and then go to the GENERAL forum and post a lengthy, tearful goodbye which, halfway through devolves into a tirade about how SL has ruined my life and I'm never, ever coming back ever again.
Then I'd log off and throw my chair across the floor - slam the door and stomp outside, get into a row with a neighbor and pull their mailbox out of the ground and leave it lying in the middle of the road while the cops come and frog-march me into the back of a cruiser.
After I get out of jail, I'd log back into my account and meekly type a post in forums apologizing to Torley about what I said about her hair and promising never to act so rudely ever again. She'd say something totally nice like "I know you didn't mean it - sometimes people just need to blow off steam" and I'd feel like a real terd. Then I'd dejectedly pick up my broken chair and sit down and log into SL and act like nothing ever happened.
As you can see, I've given it a lot of thought.

I could never dream of cancelling my account. But...if I had to...I would probably sell all my stuff to make some money back...and give the rest to friends. But seriously...why would you want to leave sl?
