I notice a lot of Residents creating avatars based on characters from anime, manga, tokusatsu, and video games. Some really amazing and detailed avatars!

In RL, this is commonly known as Cosplay.

Are there specific Groups in SL focused on "Cosplay in Second Life"? Are they organized around specific anime/manga/tokusatu/video games? I'd love to meet some of these folks and learn more about what's going on.

Also, New England's Largest Anime Convention is happening May 26-28 in Boston. I'm planning on attending and spreading the word about Second Life (and yes, I'll be dressed as the black mage Vivi from Final Fantasy). I'd also like to organize a meet-up for any Residents attending this conference, so if you're planning on going please let me know!

Take care,
-Pathfinder

SLAC/AetherStyle is a great place for that kind of thing, yes.

There's lots of funky anime costumes around too but most of them are private items :(

What are the rules governing the sale of items meant to mimic the works of other people? If someone want's to buy my Kon (from Bleach) avatar can I put it up for sale without making a stir?

Furthermore, as Second Life goes to the Metaverse, and this becomes an open platform, Linden Lab risks lawsuit in court and [attachment culling] will, I repeat WILL be reverse in court.

Hey, I remember that series... I used to watch that with Jadey over the Internet. We'd tap our Play buttons in sync, hehe... well, what I've long gone by are things that are "inspired" or "influenced" by other sources but really have their own new life in SL. Schtuff that doesn't exist outside of SL yet, but is being developed and cultured here.

That being said, there's an odd dearth of anime content in some respects in SL. I've mentioned this before: I see a lot of Resis who are into it, but not enough content to satisfy them. Maybe some will make their own, but I just see a lot of things that could be done, i.e. more anime-oriented skins (trouble I'm sure because of how lighting works in here, difficult to get a cellshade look), original texture packs with sketchy and very stylized designs, and soforth. Eyeballs and vehicles too.

I remember visiting Second Life Anime Cosplay (SLAC) when it was on Briarcliff Manor, the whole setting it was in was just a lot of fun, cozy smalltown feel.

My anime doesn't seem to have sustained enough popularity in SL to justify going to somewhere in Massachusetts and putting on a costume. I'll stick to my builds and roleplay in SL, thanks.

I'd watch out for trademark law. Copyright might also bite you too. That being said and all - I've noticed Anime publishing houses tend to allow a wider degree of freedom with their copyrights. I'd try sending an email to the studio concerned about creating fan-works, and what conditions they impose.

Yeah. Part of the reason is IP law in Japan is generally tougher, but also is fairly permissive in the sense that non-profit performance is allowed. Combined with the informal understanding most anime/manga studios have with the fans (considering many of their artists got their *start* that way) they tend to be quite permissive.

Charging fake money (L$) is a bit more of a grey area, although I suppose you could argue "paying for tier" doesn't constitute a profit per se, since officially the L$ has no value.

I wear my Kamen Rider V3 outfit fairly often. I met Zabitan and he has his own tokusatsu hero as well.
