I dont know if this should go in PRODUCTS WANTED. But, I dont want to BUY a bookstore or newsstand. I was just wondering where the bookstores and newsstands are located in SL.
Is there a big bookstore, like Barnes and Nobles IRL, that sells SL inworld books and magazines? I've seen small vendors for single magazines, like PLAYERS, but I havent found a single large bookstore or newsstand with a large selection.
Thanks!

Thanks! I think helping HAND or whoever has a news stand. I don't think they sell them, but you might be able to get one with full perms to put your own stuff in it.

Osprey Therian and Enjah Mysterio have Grignano Books in Grignano, Nova Albion. It's a small eclectic bookstore with volumes produced inworld.

I doubt there is much market for books inworld, folks who want to read a book would be better served with a real world book or for reading onscreen an ebook or a pdf file a word file or even a plaintext file in notepad would be more functional than a book in SL.
Then there is the copyright issue, can't legally use copyrighted text, and the out of copyright material has very low demand.

There is the _blacklibrary, might not qualify as a store but it does have reading material.

Not exactly a bookshop, but there's the _blacklibrary in Games 1 (or 2, I forgot).

I have been helping Toast Bard put together a small store of books that will mainly be 'art' books of anything from SL architecture, photography (SL or RL), and any other form of resident art. Its an idea that stemed off the idea of a gallery, instead of a gallery we are having artists put together books which they can sell for a few L. They are actually pretty cool to own I think.

Newspapers and Periodicals Kiosks
04-04-2006 15:31
A while ago, I set up a bunch of these "Read all about it" - Newspapers and Periodicals Kiosks around SL (Ahern and Waterhead WAs, Linden Office, my office, LL recruiting center, and all the infohubs). I'm happy to list available newspapers and periodicals in 'em. But so far, the only periodical that has given me information is the Metaverse Messenger. All the kiosks get their notecard from a central notecard server that I keep up to date and that tracks how many notecards total have been given out. I just checked, and as of today all those kiosks have given out a total of 6000 notecards (six thousand, no typo there...) If someone sends me inworld a description of their newspaper or periodical, a picture, and a landmark where folks can find it, I'd be happy to add it to the directory. (and yep, I also mention that fact in the notecard given out by the kiosk). -Pathfinder

We are in the process of setting up a "snippet shop" called Nifty Snippets which will feature legal snippets of our real world books, stories and chapbooks. The notecard format is not ideal, but it can work well for samples, and it lets people decide if they want to read more. We are SRM Publisher -- http://www.korval.com/srmcat2.htm -- We also have a couple of sample snippet books lying around at The Friends of Liad park. Some other materials lying around at the park are -- I think -- from The Librarium and are from Project Gutenburg materials. Once we see how our own fiction goes over we'll decide if we want to extend the snippets to other things we publish as well as material from other professionals. We are some days away from opening the shop since we're working close to deadline on some other RL stuff. but it ought to be soon since we want t have it working at least in part before we go to Penguicon 4.0 (April 21-23), where we are author Guests of Honor. It's my understanding, though, that PDFs can be distributed through SL, even though the reader might actually read it offline or on their mobile device. I've seen a newspaper or two in-game, for example, that have done this - given PDF issues out for free at their RL website, for example, but then sell the same PDFs in-game through a paperbox for 10 cents or so. I'm interested in this subject as well, so thought I'd chime in too and see if anyone knows of a place in SL doing this - selling or giving out PDFs through a retail environment, for people to later read offline. I'm the owner of an arts center in RL Chicago that opens in September, and one of the things we'll be doing is publishing 24 electronic books for free our first year. I'd love to set up a retail store for giving away these books in-game; I'm just curious if anyone's doing this already.

He has the bookstore right next the telehub in Caledon.
