How can you tell if someone is capturing your text and others around you from a distance?

If others around you are inside cages, I think it's likely that they've been captured.
There's not really a way to tell if anyone is capturing chat text though.

Always assume they are. If you have things you don't want others to hear, always say them in IM to someone you trust (even then I am told there is still a way to intercept them).

There really is no privacy in SL.

You can use a base64 encrypted messaging system between the two parties. Ofcourse after decryption or right before encryption the text would be accessable to anyone at LL or the networks between you and LL servers.

To the OP: You can always be within chat range and have the consent of people around to capture the text, hit the history button and it should be there. Any other menthod that invovles capturing some chat, without consent, without you being there, is against the ToS.

A little known (?) technique for private group chat is to create a folder with the Calling Cards of the group of people you want to chat with - then IM the folder (it's a right-clicky option on the folder). You'll then be in IM with ALL of the people who's Calling Cards are in the folder.
