We could make land too if we could apply raw files and textures to subdivided parcels.

<- votes for ^ that.

though I do think that the textures should fade into one another say over 8 meters (2 squares).

Or you could do it the LL way, as on Help Island, coveriing it with hundreds of grass prims because that's easier to do.

By the way, if landowners could assign textures to parcels, would that be limited to the linden terrain textures, or could it include such things as the "Impeach George Bush" texture and other such delights?

Realistically, I'd limit it to the standard library of ground textures to provide some consitency across The World All Hail The Central World.

The idea is usually met with an argument that decries the ground becoming a patchwork quilt. I suppose those people don't get out much to see what real ground looks like.

yes, a ground texture library supplied by the lindens would be good.

I agree.

There is a sim in the snow lands with over 59,000 sq.m. of grass prims, all of which show up with some delay after the snow is displayed, showing up as gray loading textures at first. This to me is one good example of why people should be able to assign the ground textures.

What you see a lot is a patchwork quilt of different sorts of ground prims, usually resulting a perfectly flat terrain, boring and slow to display. The objects above add any patchwork quilt effect the mismatched terrain prims fail to provide.

To answer the question in the original thread, Land is what you turn off with Control Alt Shift 5, Content is what you turn off with Control Alt Shift 9 and Control Alt Shift 4. In a no script zone.

I admit I might be tempted to change the land texture on my mainland plots. But what about themed regions like the snow sims, or Lost Lakes (Ambleside, etc)? Should there be mainland regions that have a limited palette, in the same way that the oldest sims have different terraforming limits?

And one forgetful question, estate/island owners can supply their own terrain textures, can't they? Not suggesting this is a substitute, just that I thought you could in those circumstances.

there's no mention of a spoon. i don't know what you are getting at, but as far as spoons are concerned, they would be classified as content in my opinion.

land and content are just data? but surely they are not the same kind of data? it seems to me that they are produced and interpreted in an entirely different manner by the server and the client.

are you saying they are essentially interchangeable? this is a real eye opener. this is going to rock my secondlife!!

Robert Land invented the Polaroid camera, while John Content played the role of Cubby on the Mickey Mouse Club.

LL make and sell land and while players make and sell content? please help me understand

i dunno whether this is a serious question or an in-joke which I don't understand. So I am going to answer it as a serious question.

Linden Labs make and sell land, which inside the game we all think of as the sim squares on the map and out of game as servers with information on them maintaining the in-world "land".

The land is provided in a form that we can see and terraform/build upon. Linden lab have made content, including free-to-copy corbusier sofas with two legs, now sold up and down the lands, and some very odd looking avatars including an Irish avatar.

On the whole though, they have kept away from originating the things built in world where they can avoid it. In world, the content includes all the the objects built from prims. Out of world you would have a hard time telling the difference, as the data is maintained on the servers in the same way as the land data.

If forced to think of an analogy, I would regard the Linden provision as the blank canvas, and the player produced content as the picture. A blank canvas without picture isn't very interesting (except to an artist!), but the picture can't exist without it.

As a producer of content, I would like to see more incentives for creators, now that the incentives for hosting are reducing.

If this was a joke...ha ha.
