Hi, I'm a Second Life n00b and a blogger-who-sometimes-writes-about-marketing. I've got a quick question, a poll actually, about the appearance of Text 100, a global PR firm, in Second Life. See also http://text100.typepad.com/hypertext/2006/08/text_100_opens_.html. I'm unaffiliated with Text 100, and my blog is at www.darrenbarefoot.com. Cheers. DB.

Personally, for me the presence of all kinds of real-life businesses and advertising in SL is a turn-off.

An interesting idea, imo. I've seen some businesses in with good products who are in dire need of image help...

Hah, the presence of PR/Marketing-type businesses in SL has been debated (and villified) ad nauseum - been there, done that (two and a half years ago), ain't gonna do it again. Whether or not anybody likes it, it's here to stay. Further, as long as a PR firm isn't breaking the TOS or CS rules, they have the right to do whatever the heck they like in SL. (Oh, and you forgot the obligatory pie option on your poll; make mine pecan, please! )

I have a little trouble understanding precisely what role they would play in SL, or at least I cannot imagine what my current PR company could do more effectively in SL than they do in RL. I think they are going to be treated with skepticism and negativity, but hooray to them for trying to prove themselves. That said, at least as far as helping SL merchants and businesses with public relations and positive image, there are certainly a few small SL businesses that come to mind right away that in are dire need of such services...

I think you will find most people in SL too cheap to actually pay "real-world" prices, even though the work would be done by a "real-world" firm.

Maybe they would be in the market for ohhh, say... some kind of big database that shows who is online the most, and who they associate with. These people would be the prime candidates for spaaaa... er... marketing!

I AM A PR FIRM. Stop saying you are the first. What exactly do you want to do in SL? Oh btw pie is great. Not naming names but some Land barons might need some oily talking fronts. Edit: Come to think of it, it would better if you guys just worked for Linden Labs, they are really in need in the PR dept.
