I'm out of town on a computer that doesn't support SL. I don't own any cool toys that would allow me to message people in world. So my question is...is there a 3rd party website that provides this as a service?

I tried PMing my friend, who sent me an instant message earlier today, via the forums, but alas...he doesn't have PMing enabled.

If he sent you an IM, you can hit reply in your email and type what you want, and it'll go straight in world..

Thanks so much Max... :)

I'll set it up when I get home.

(I'm kind of being held hostage by my travel plans...so this maybe anywhere between 1-3 days...lol!)

Email To Im Bridge
12-30-2005 14:05
I have one of these set up, but I still seem to have problems sometimes. What might cause an email to get sent back by Postfix program at lindenlab? Do avatars ever change keys?

Thanks,
Baron

Hi Baron,

Keys of avatars don't ever change. Keys of Objects do change, each time they are rezzed. So your EMAIL>IM Bridge needs to stay rezzed in world all the time, so it's key won't change.

Hope this helps. If you have more details on the error message you receive back, that could help figure out the problem.

M.

Changing keys
12-30-2005 17:20
I have a couple of people in my friends list in my "bridge". Right now, I cannot log in to SL to check the keys in it. But I tried to IM one of the people through the bridge, and I get an error throught the Postfix program.

I looked through my emails (from IMs while I was out-of-game). The key on one of the avatars changed at least a couple of times. Or, at least, the reply email address is different. Any idea why this might be? She was just IMing me directly from her avatar, as far as I know.

Thanks,
Baron

The hash value SL uses when gating IMs to email does not appear to be the avatar key. Furthermore they are transient. I checked IM->Email messages from the same person, one from July and one from November, and the sending address is very different:

July: 412e97e1-c89a-7712-45d8-e2eeb18bbedc@im.secondlife.com
Nov: 02695c69-644d-5654-2e99-4e58730be9e9@im.secondlife.com

The November message is unreplyable, LL's "mailglue" command returns the following

Command output: This email to instant message session has expired.

Of course it does it in a horribly ugly bounce message that 1) a n00b might be freaked out by, and 2) sortof masks the fact that this is a normal thing, these addresses expire. I'd suggest a change, except that they're talking about changing to an open protocol sometime this year.

This should have no impact on the Email to IM gateway product somebody mentioned here, which would be using the avatar keys directly on it's end.

Hi Baron.
The keys you should be using for the bridge are Avatar Keys - Not the key you are getting when someone's IM is forwarded to you through the system. You should use the Key Getter provided if you don't know how to get someone's key.

Okay. I guess I was under the mistaken impression that the emails coming from IMs were the avatar keys. I'll get it yet!

Thanks.
