This is not a wholly new or original idea, just something I've been thinking about after Philip's blogged clarification of his speech at the anniversary meeting. Second Life is in position to grant us a transitional environment from private web space to collaborative public space. All Linden Lab have to do is offer us the option.
In Private Mode we can only see ourselves. We are alone in the world. We can browse the 3D space just as we currently do the web. We still see the effects of editing and such, but never encounter other avs. This is browseable 3D web space where we can explore, study and work. <point>Avs in Private Mode can see no other avs but themselves.</point>
In Collaborative Mode we can see and interact with other avs that are set to collaborative mode. This is a world peopled with other avs where we can socialize and work together. <point>Only avs in Collaborative Mode can see only other avs in Collaborative Mode; no av in Private Mode can see avs in Collaborative Mode; avs in Private Mode can see no other avs but themselves.</point>
I've no idea how difficult this is to implement so a Linden Dev will have to comment on that. It bears further thought for group only collaboration and such things.

Does this mean that an inviso AV can go place C4 in an area where other AV's are but who can't be seen or see the griefer because they are in privacy mode? Then the C4 goes off after the griefer leaves and the other AV's are blown to the heavens?!
Sounds AWESOME! Stock up on C4 peoples!
SHEESH!
Initially, it may sound good but there are many more details that have to be known before I'd go for such a thing.

From: Savonah Madonna Does this mean that an inviso AV can go place C4 in an area where other AV's are... No, because if the implementation made any sense the Inviso-mode would be a local-to-the-user, emulated copy of the sim.

Oh well yes I haven't Jarod's ability to parse architecture on the fly but he's right. Private browsing is conducted in a sharded, local copy of the sim so that the av won't see edits and such and can have no effect on the gridded copy of the sim that is occupied by the people in Collaborative Mode.
