Ive Noticed that there are a lot of last names in SL that are no longer available to create characters as anymore. Is there a cap? A limit on how many people can have the name? And is it possible to bring them out of retirement? I know that the lindens are too hellaciously busy to custom names, or go around changing them for anyone who asks, but it seems like it would be a simpler thing to bring back an existing option... (To me anyway. It's probobly much more difficult than i think it is) Anyone Know?

torley replied to a fairly recent question about names. you could probably find it. something along the lines of names being retired when they get 300 ppl.
i think names have been brought out of retirement before but dunno if they still do it.

Names are constantly cycled in and out, and as far as I know, retired names do not come back. There seems to be a limit to the number of times a name is used, but I don't know the exact number. I think 300 may be a bit high, but then again, LL could be letting the names stay longer this year.

8D Oh? I nosed around a bit, but diddnt find anything that looked like it. Must have missed it, i guess... Does anyone know how much effort would be required to bring a name out of retirement, or to take up one of those 300 spots if someone drops SL?

Dang. Just talked to Dee Linden. No bringing names from retirement, and there is a name cap. Shoot.

OK I didn't read Torley's post yet but I DO have an opinion on this subject.
I'd prefer that names were NOT brought back or recycled.......names are indicitive of a 'batch' that we belong to.....ever see "The Island"? lol
'Lincoln-six-echo-'
Keep the old names 'old' names...........don't resurrect them

It used to be 150 per name. Now it is 300.
