Hi, guys.
I'm not on my SL computer now (it's elsewhere, and i'm on a slow mac which probably wouldn't let me download SL) and I want to send an IM to a friend who's online ther now. Can I do that, and if so how?
Thanks!

Peace, Valerie

If you have IM-to-email forwarding turned on in your SL preferences, you could ask someone here to go ask her to IM you in world. Then you can have an IM-email conversation.

There's no way to start the conversation from email unless you set up a scripted object in SL to check for emails and forward them as IMs. I've seen one for sale (I have a feeling the author was Max Case?). I expect when 1.9.1 is released next week there will be several that do a lookup in an external agent-key database so you'll be able to contact any one of the 62,000 or so avatars those databases contain. That's what I plan to do. :)

From yesterday - I think so. The address is a temporary one, but I think it lasts at least 24 hours. Give it a try - otherwise post his name (or send me a private message if you'd prefer) and I'll pop in and tell him.

i'll give it a shot. If i have trouble in the next 5 minutes, i'll ask you to pass it on. otherwise figure it's good. thanks so much again!

Can't remember where I saw it, but there are plans to support this in the futre. But I believe it was promised a long time ago and has not yet been delivered. I think they said they were looking to use Jabber (an open source IM protocol) instead of the current proprietary one. This way you could use any Jabber client to chat when you're not in-world. This is even more compelling now that Google Talk is out, and uses Jabber, and iChat on the Mac supports it as well.

I'm sure someone else has more details on this. I'd love to know the status, or if it's been shelved.

Cheers,
