I personally would prefer to get rid of the horrible lag and slow texture loading that has been present over the past few weeks. It seems to have gotten so bad that changing clothes can take redicullously long now.

Please! Fix the lag and texture load times. Please make THIS a priority.

Few weeks? If you'd said "got increasingly worse over the last 18 months" I would have agreed with you without caveats.

EDIT: We all need to pray to which ever God, or entity, is your choice that Second Life does not reach "tipping point" any time soon. It will implode if it does and we'll all be shafted.

"Tipping" - is this related to the old hip topic "catastophe theory", or just really old timey exponential growth?

At any rate, if there is a massive increase in userbase, perhaps this would entice some competors into the field. Perhaps they will be better than Linden Lab at some things, such as, say, being able to allow one to search their inventory by creator, and worse at other things, such as generating images of gray rectangles with white outlines. One can hope.

I am not having these problems either. Although I am sure your described experiences are real, I do think that those of us who do not have these problems should speak up as well. The issues are apparently not universal.

Detailed system specs from those who see the world appear near instantly and never see a gray texture might make the responses from those in that condition more useful than simply saying "It works for me.".

It's about so high. It's black... and it sounds like a dishwasher.

I would love to hear from anybody that sees the world instantly! All I can say for my part is that I am not seeing any problems in the last few weeks greater than those I have seen in the last few months. System specs from anybody seeing a massive problem in the last few weeks might also be helpful.

I'm on a $20,000 PC and everything runs great!

Seriously..:)

Asus P4P800 SE
Pentium4 HT 3.0 1mbc/800fsb (prescott)
4 gigs RAM Dual-Channel DDR@533mhz
Western Digital SATA 500gb
Geforce 7800 GS (AGP 8x)
Cable Modem to 10/100 LAN

Not a super-hot system by todays SLI standards, but pretty decent, and if I keep the draw distance <128 I get good FPS. (I do think the large RAM amount helps SL alot). But there are still times when I go somewhere with a lot of AVs that loading slows down to a crawl for a while, then perks up again once everything is loaded...i think thats probably a network throughput issue though...? Curious if other's experience the same thing...

Detailed system specs from those that see the gray would make a better response than asking the majority of the others that don't see the gray that too often. I live 8500 miles away from LL and don't see gray.

clap, a common venereal disease caused by the bacterium Neisseria gonorrhoeae; symptoms are painful urination and pain around the urethra.

 I'm not sure if anyone in this thread will give it to you, but who knows.

I'm not really convinced it's related to system specs guys. I have a _very_ old computer, and have never experienced a scene full of unloaded textures. SL _is_ too slow at times on my PC, like when there are lots of avatars around. But textures always loaded pretty fast, at least when I was last using SL (which I admit was a while ago but even then, people have been posting about problems with grey textures for some time).

More interesting to see than system specs would be texture console snapshots and the logs that SL generates in the debug consoles. I'm starting to wonder if this is really a problem with constant but low level packet loss rather than system specs. I know the logs are, uh, verbose ... but it'd be interesting if somebody seeing this problem could upload a full log somewhere.

The technical forum is probably the place for attempts to figure out why some folks have slow rendering and texture loading problems while others don't. There are existing threads there on these topics.
