Intermediate punishment for misbehavior: grounding

I've recently run across a number of different people "testing" their weapons in various no-shooting sandboxes, who won't stop when asked and respond to the requests by escalating. I imagine most people recognize this description from one perspective or another...

It seems to me that there could be a punishment short of suspension for the script kiddies with read-only minds: ground the offender for some span of logged-on, non-AFK time. That is: (1) disable TP, and force all re-entries to the last logged-off location, and (2) limit velocity to unassisted-running speed. No sit-splitting, no parameter-list warping, nothing: any motion greater than mortal velocity could achieve in a given logged-on-time span will just clip the motion vector to the speed limit.

It'd be another tool in a toolbox. Exactly whose toolbox is of course up to the Lindens (though I do think it could be useful to have the option of, say, up to [pulls number out of hat] a couple hours, at least notionally available to some of the Live Help crew).

I've done maybe half a dozen different searches (variations on "disable TP" and the like) and haven't found this proposed before. If I missed it, please post a pointer. Thanks.

so you're thinking of the cornfield or they stay in SL itself but have their wings clipped, so to speak?

Wings clipped. The penalty timer only runs while they're logged on and not afk.

The cornfield?

Ack. This s/b in the feature-requests box, not general.

A penalty timer that runs only when they're logged in. Evil ... and yes it does work (the approach was used in another game).

In muds its referred to as the corner. A room in the game scripted so you cant walk, talk, sit, stand, message or anything except just be stuck there for a time limit determined by the admin who cornered you. The timer only counts down when not idle/afk and while actively trying to do something. The mud i coded for i upgraded it even further so that anyone in the corner had their last several hundred commands logged and if any pattern was detected it would assume you were using a timed bot to enter your commands and start the punishment over again. Invalid commands were ignored but if you entered more than 1 in a row (typing gibberish) that also reset the penalty time. In about 3 years coding at that mud there were only 2 people I can remember who ever had to be cornered more than once.

I think it sounds cool but it seems to be more or less the point of the cornfield...

The cornfield?

It's an sl legend. A place to which evil-doers are sent. Some people claim to have seen it.

Ok, I found how to make the forum search deliver actual posts and not just threads, so now I have some idea what the cornfield means.

This is less severe in one sense, more so in another in that, even though it's not branded on your forehead, and you can still go everywhere:eek: and do everything, it's detectable to anyone who's been around long enough to know what to look for. So the penalized would get to choose between secluding themselves and risking public and personal exposure.

It's just a different set of consequences.

 yecch. except across voids: so treat voids that intersect the built convex hull as no-build 0.0000001 minute auto-return parcels?

I'm of an older school. I think it should be a spanking, administered by a scantily-clad Linden.

This is intended to reduce incidences of misbehavior.
