Looking briefly at the upcoming group tools in one of the previews, it occurs to me that people will be able to not only use them for mundane functional purposes but might also be able to make some kind of a game using them. Like, set up different "roles", establish rules for moving into different roles, stuff like that.

Maybe, yeah :) But I suspect it'll get boring pretty quickly...
I do think they'll use roles in groups to accurately track roles in already-played roleplaying games? So instead of a big roleplay place having 5 different groups, one for each major role, they could have just one group with 5 roles? That would make more sense to me, and would seem more usefully connected to having fun :)

If we - maybe only group members or such for privacy -got LSL access to a person's status or role in the group scripters might be able to get some use out of that for gaming.

If, say, llGetGroupStatus let you know whether someone had the role of Infantry-Soldier versus Armored-Infantry-Soldier it could apply damage differently. Instead of having to keep lists of who has what status the group system would do the work.

As for it getting boring, well, if people played the Forum Nomic game, they'll play anything.
