A brief question for experienced scripting contractors out there: would anyone mind telling me what the "going rate" is for scripting work, either based on the scale of the work or the amount of time put into the project? If you do script-for-hire, do you simply negotiate price on a per-task basis, or do you have fixed rates...and what's the concensus on down-payments?
I'm considering undertaking some contracting work and I'd appreciate any input...I'd like to be fair to myself and my employer. Thanks.

Developers can then measure which new concepts most improve the products and incorporate them into the game in future patches."

It all depends on the project, really. For a straight up script (no building), we generally charge an hourly fee (starting at $L2000, higher for more complex scripts). For resellable (transfer) rights, the price jumps depending on what your intentions are with it. If the scripting is done in the context of a larger building project, then we usually judge according to the scope of the project, but we'll try to seperate the scripting out if we can. I think you'll probably find that pricing varies wildly, as it does with anything else. Ask to see examples of previous work and the length of time it took to create it. Ask them for references. Ask questions to make sure your scripter knows exactly what you want - one miscommunication can mean hours worth of rewriting. When you find a scripter you're confident in, I would say generally a retainer of some sort would be needed to promote good faith and show you aren't going to evaporate, especially if the scripter has a lot of other work coming in. On the other hand, try to protect yourself as well - since scripts don't have to be handed over until they're 100% complete, I wouldn't give the scripter half-down as payment - leave yourself in the position where its in the scripter's best interest financially to hand over the completed script. Hope this helps a little - not saying this is set in stone, but its just how our business has worked out to handle charges. Good luck!
