haha.
As I am waiting for the grid to come up, I thought how neat it would be for me to do creations in SinglePlayer mode and when the grid comes up and I log in, my creation is transferred to my inventory.
Probably a reasonable explanation for not having SP available.

Linden Lab really should consider this (though I really doubt they will). The ability to download our inventory, with permissions in tact, would be a major plus, too. I mean if they can't take care of our inventory and guarantee it won't be lost, we should at least be able to.
I would love to download everything in my inventory, delete it all and then re-upload only the stuff I need as I need it -- THINK of the strain that would be taken off the asset servers.
I also cannot see any technical reason why there can't be an offline viewer. Or at least connected to the internet so it can fetch textures and stuff.
The more you think this through, I can't see why Linden Lab isn't pursuing something like this.

another use for an off-grid home-run server would be to test your objects/scripts/anims/anything else without having to worry about other people bothring you or worrying about sim lag or spikes or a sudden "we have to close the server to fix something."
it would be nice if i could write scripts and test them outside of the SL Grid, because sometimes i can't find a good place with little lag... but then again running a home serve would all depend on the status o your own computer and what it could handle...
also: releasing an off-grid server to the public could raise problems with people trying to find ways to hack the grid/sims through reverse engineering the files given...
so... ya... take yer pick

A good bit of the code - the bulk of it - that runs SL runs on the servers at 365 Main. The physics calculations for objects, for one example, take place on the SL servers. In order for a stand alone client to display physics enabled objects behaving like they currently do the client would have to run code the servers currently run.
Lots of stuff, like linking, take place on the servers. Running scripts takes place on the servers. The textures in our inventories are stored in San Francisco.

Even a small viewer, with just prim building and linking ability, would be great! I could knock out the basics of a build outside the grid, and texture in-world with stuff from the asset server.
Someday.
For now, I'll continue to build on my platform at 700M. It's as close to single player as one can get at this point.

Server code security is probably an important consideration at LL. Releasing it as a separate product might induce major reverse engineering efforts by competitors. ( I wonder about competitors having the same bugs, whether they are breaking copyright??? Are bugs subject to copyright?)
Otherwise they are missing out on a major money earner. I would be quite happy to spend a couple of hundred bucks or so to get a compatible stand alone version of sl running on my pc.

Yes, yes. YES!!! This is JUST what Linden Lab Needs! When the server's down, drive around in your mustang with NO LA.... Uh oh... You can't use your inventory if the servers down, because it wont load...
But still id be on that when it's up, you could drive arount in your 493 prim mustang with NO LAG and make your own little sim that you can save and do anything you want to it with NO PAYMENTS!!! This is teh c00l!
Linden Lab, somehow, someway, please make a 1 Player Second Life. Please?

(Other than the one where I wake up in a bed of silk, and there are these women....)
I would love to see LL sell a stand alone simulator, with a much higher prim limit. Of course that might be making SL akin to AW, which is bad...
Well think of it this way, a sim just for yourself where you can build to your heart's content... like a stand-alone sandbox... hell I would pay for it, but not the same as I would pay for a private island.

The only problem I could see is that nobody would be online. Except kids. :addition: Well thats not true. I guess it has it's social aspect still. Like building together and all that.
