Notecard Spammer

This person has a notecard dispensor near my land. I pop into my land and am immediately spammed. I have at least 4 of them in my inv, and have cleaned them out many times before. I have dutifully filed AR reports and was told by a Linden that I just need to keep filing them.


Am I the only one annoyed that this person is spamming passers by? I could see a notecard dispensor (barely) if I was actually going to his property, but I am not. I TP directly to my land and don't even stray off of it.

Yes this would be very annoying if you are not on his land when it happens. Have you complained to the spammer? Most business people don't want to be annoying. I hope this one corrects the problem.

Notecard spammers have been successfully ARed before. Ignore what she or he has to say about it, go straight to the Lindens.

Get a notecard server of your own. Come up with a nice, no ARable note about spammers, and set it going.

A lot of people can dish it out, but they usually get pretty bent out of shape when *they* have to take it.

If any of their buildings are close enough to the border of your land, plant the BIGGEST DAMN TREE you can find in your inventory and angle it so it sticks directly into their building. Guaranteed to get their attention fairly quickly.

What you ought to do is send them a quick IM with an explicit Instruction to continue the regular delivery of notecards until further notice.

I know you think this idea is nuts but if you do this with absolute sincerity you put them in a funny situation, one they wont like at all.

They are left with a choice of either stopping the notecards or obeying you!

A choice where both outcomes are favourable to your because .A stopping the notecards is the desired end and B because if they choose the latter you've started them down a path of accepting your suggestions and conditioning them to obey you. It wont take long to follow this path to its natural end of them stopping the notecards spam - if you go down this route IM me in game and ill tel you what to do next once youve got them obeying you.

People dont like to be told what to do and the kind of people that do this with notecards certainly will object to obeying the instructions of their peers and neighbours. This is suond psychology, you'd think people would see straight through it and people often do but that doesnt matter, it still leaves them in the same situation wether they realise it or not, has little effect on their resultant behaviour.

note: this technique is enhanced if you can figure out a way to show that you are actaully benefiting free of charge from their notecard spam, maybe you are working on a device that monitors your inventory and the regular notecards are an exellent way to test its effectiveness. Someone so keen to profit in business wil be loathed to see someone profiting freely from themsleves!

And I was in different sims each time. Once I was in Explorers Rangeland, and once I was flying at over 1000m at high speed, and the sim names were flashing by like reflectors on the highway.

I think somebody's found a way to deliver notecards by a brute force sequential processing of the membership lists somehow. I don't think it's sensor triggered at all.

Thank you all for the advice. As tempting as a few of your suggestions are, I must remember an old proverb... When you throw dirt, you loose ground. If I am going to be filing ARs then I need to keep MY hands clean. Its like shooting someone back and then complaining about being shot. If you never fired a shot yourself, you have the "high ground".

I have been looking for the dispensor so I can mute the damned thing, but no luck so far.

I don't think you can mute something that stuffs an item in your face. You can set yourself Busy and then items will be rejected out of hand.

Another tongue in cheek evil idea for the pot:
-Open a carpet store specialising in 2048X2048 textures, with 100s on display at all times. Don't forget the audio preload!

Someone had a large image-wall near where I live. It was rotating around 30 images at very high speed among a bunch of smaller prims. (Around one every half second.) I saw the image time of the sim stats shoot up to around 40ms or so and hover constantly and eventually located that as the source.

Thankfully, it disappeared the next day...

I know this winner's notecards. He can't build for crap, either. I've seen them so far in Mieto, Janus, and a few sims I can't remember the name of right now (I travel around a lot.)

BTW You can name a business ISL, just not the people involved, AFAIK.

I got this notecard three times in less than a minute once.

It just stiffened my resolve to never, ever, ever buy anything made by him.

I am curious however... what did Live Help say? A few weeks back I had to deal with someone whose security system was spamming outside their parcel and Live Help was quick to respond and disable the item. I would think they would have no cause to reject a request in your situation, Land Management deals with trees that sway into neigbor's houses, and this is much worse...

I've gotten one from him and I was in my own shop and as far as I know he doesn't even have land anywhere near me. Only once though. If it had been more than just once.. I'd have AR'd without a second thought.

I was told to continue to file abuse reports and that there was nothing they could do. I know I talked to a Linden, but the blond in me forgot to write down which one.

You know, whenever I get that sort of statement from a Linden, my time here in SL causes my ears to re-translate it to "*I* won't do anything to help you, but another Linden probably can!"

I'd say see about capturing a second Linden opinion on this; there's no reason why you should have to tolerate someone's notecard spam while you're on your own land.

OK. Got an "abuse report resolved" message this morning. I shall wait and see. I am sure I will hear from him again. It claims that I should be able to see something in the blotter, but I dont. Ehhh, such is secondlife.

I've been dealing with this exact same situation with the exact same person for three months.

I have over 100+ AR case numbers, some of which are my own, the rest of which are residents of my parcel, and customers of my business.

I have spoken with several Lindens on this issue directly.

I have called Linden Labs several times.

Over the last two days I have been assured by Lindens I've spoken to at Linden Labs that the situation is being "actively dealt with". Yesterday I was told the situation would be resolved yesterday.

Today I was told the situation is taking longer to resolve than originally planned and it will be resolved today.

I expect I'll have to call Linden Labs again tommorrow cause somehow resolution of this situation seems to be impossible to attain.

Here are my recommendations:

1.) DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES BUY THE LAND THE ADS ARE ON - thats this persons game. Hes not here to build stuff...hes here to annoy you into buying ad land off him that you don't need for exorbitantly inflated prices. Remember the Bush Guy? Yeah..its like that.

2.) FILE AN ABUSE REPORT EVERY TIME YOU GET A NEW NOTECARD - Technically this persons ads are not "spam" because they only give you a notecard the first time the sensor listmaker in the spammer sees you. But...the person resets the ads every one to two days, so you get a new notecard every time.

3.) BRING UP THE ISSUE IN LIVE HELP EVERY TIME YOU GET A NOTECARD - Cut and paste all your previous AR numbers into the chat and demand to speak to a Linden.

4.) CONTACT CONCIERGES EVERY TIME YOU GET A NOTECARD - According to everything I've been told, the Concierges are well aware of this issue....contacting them directly with your previous AR numbers and continuing concerns is a way to ensure they stay well aware of it.

5.) CALL LINDEN LABS @ 1 - 800 -961 -8651 - Communicate your concerns directly to the Lindens on this issue.

These are the only ways we're going to be able to get this resolved. If all the affected people are rattling their cages about it...the Lindens have to do something.

As I said...I've been assured that they are doing "something"....but...again, I've been dealing with this now for three months and I've yet to see a resolution.

I hope for the best, but as they say, prepare for the worst.

I didn't see any indication this was a "fight", son.

The method I suggested worked for me when IM-ing the a**shole involved did not, and AR-ing did not work, as the Lindens were not paying attention to "property encroachment" issues at the time (the neighbor's property was originally encroaching on my ability to walk past my own building without walking through their damn bushes which stuck over the property line, so a nice big Linden eucalyptus angled into the fool's living room DEFINITELY got his attention.

So, little newbie, think before you bitch at people who have been here longer than you have.

Well its getting close to midnight over on the West Coast.

And no surprise...I'm still getting notecard spam on my land after being assured on the phone by two seperate Lindens yesterday, and today, that the issue was being handled and would be resolved "today".

So much for assurances.

Look up Proposal 1585 on the feature voting site...it proposes a functional toggle feature which could make this situation a moot point if we could get enough votes behind it to get the Lindens to implement it.

I flew by the idiot's main place in Quat. Got spammed twice while standing on the Road. I admit I flew by just to test to see if it was really fixed, which is why I didn't AR report that time. He is still up to his old tricks.
