SL Forums Experiencing Recession

Its official.. the bloom is off the boom of the SL forums. The total number of threads and posts continues to steadily decline compared to 1Q 05. I would venture that it is safe to say that the forums are experiencing a recession.

What is contributing to this recession? A couple factors I would say:

(1) There is little new blood in the forums. The same old crusties hang around year after year, leading to little originality and new ideas.

(2) At this point, 3 years into SL's existance, many of the likely topics have been discussed at length. And often over and over again. Its just so many words at this point.

(3) LL has culled the egregious posters. This has led to what some would refer to as "more civility" though it has led to a general decline in the numerical number of posts made.

Feel free to discuss.

No, nobody cares about this. The art of satire is in bad shape though.

Sadly, I haven't been around long enough to really see how the "old days" were since I was one of the first people to join in late october's free account deal. One thought of mine for the change of attitude is, as you said, the lack of new blood and the fact that alliances and grudges have already been made; it will take a lot to change those relationships.

But at least this isn't the worst forums I have been to... there are a lot worse than this.

While I would say it's true so many of the topics have been discussed at length, I would disagree that there's not new blood. I've been seeing enough new posters pop up lately that I consider myself now a solid "midbie," lol.

This type of comment is indicative of the forums at large. Bad attitudes, "Can't Do" outlooks.

Normally I would agree that going carp fishing is a good alternative to the forums, but given recent events regarding carp play in SL, I'm not so sure anymore.

So true. I'm so crusty, the other day I slathered on some jam and took a bite out of myself. Much to my surprise I was delicious!

I believe the solution here, is for LL to promote more activity int eh forums. Forums in general build off of an actuve churn of posts and threads. The more you have, the more it encourages other posters to contribute.

So, to achieve this, I suggest a weekly Forum Post Stipend. Each week members of LL will post once under each basic member account and ten times under each premier member account.

*puts on his spectacles, straightens his tie*

Despite current short-term negative-growth factors in forum cross-literary exchanges and general daily volumes, the 10-day versus 30-day trends show an upward-scaling rating in the non-chitter segment, further putting pressure on the always struggling chatter market.

Given the cyclic nature of the upswinging downturn, highly officious authenticational authorities have declare that the long-term situation will definitely have a trend to variations in chitter versus chatter dynamic interactions. The current bearish inclination of bull conspiracies indicate that exremental developments are imminent, and existing volumes support the underlying theory.

(translation: It's all bullshite. Talk about making something out of nothing, oy!)

It's exceedingly rare that memories of "the good old days" actually has any significant connection with reality. :p

(there's also the search function, for the masochistic ;) )

As for activity in the forums, so what? I seem to recall that SL was, first and foremost, a virtual world. The forums may be helpful, but aren't absolutely vital to SL's viability.

I remember the good old days when we would all shoot the shizot with Phil in world. We'd roast marshmellows and Phil would tell jokes. It was great.

Simple, Jamie - you are FEMALE and crass vulgar men think they can insult you with sexually vulgar terms and invitations to die.

And we're all supposed to just ROLL OVER AND TAKE IT.

I've gone back on my determination not to involve myself in this reporting system, after being told that my reports did not count, and reported posts in this thread anyway, as being entirely beyond of pale of ANY CIVILIZED PLACE and insulting to ALL SL RESIDENTS.

And not insiginificantly, to ALL WOMEN.

This, Robin Linden, is why I do not recommend SL to my friends.

Unfortunately, reporting it is the only way I can be certain that it has been brought to the Lindens' attention.

I take enough discrimination and male BS IRL. I simply won't be brought down by the chauvinists of the virtual one.

This thread has veered dangerously off topic and has devolved to name-calling. As such, I am locking this thread pending Linden review.

Discussion of the SL Forums is appreciated. However, violations of the Guidelines are not.

Also, threads that are addressed to a single individual or group are inappropriate on the forums, this includes slander or "naming names" in a posts title, starting polls about a particular resident or group, etc.
As such, this thread remains locked.
