Ok, boys and girls! Old Foolish frost is going to help all of you kids out with a basic primer on manners, abuse, and how to be a good forum citizen! Let's start with some examples... A. "I dissagree with your opinion, and feel it lacks perspective." B. "That idea is kind of stupid, and I'm not sure you know what you're talking about..." C. "What kind of moron are you? That the the worst idea I ever heard!" D. "Listen up you $#|%-headed moron! Get your #&@*^ ass off my boards before I #@!(*& your (#$*& all the way back to the #$*(&-hole you were spawned from!" Now kids, which of these is the best way to respond to something with which you dissagree? No.... Try again... <sigh> OK. Try A. A is the best way. B is ALLOWABLE, but not very good. Still, even B does not directly attack anyone, just thier idea. Now C starts into bad territory. It actually DEFINES the person as something in a negitive way. This is 'wrong', and should be shunned as a method of communication. D is right out as an option, as it's not only direct verbal abuse, but also a threat. The use of simulated profanity also is to note a point to avoid. I hope we learned something today, and remember: If you abuse people, they may come with lead pipes in the night to REALLY do a number on your <edited out>, ya hear?

I'm curious to know who doesn't know this already? Seriously, I think people just want to say how they feel without caring about what the rules are. Not that they don't know them its just they don't give a fuck. MJ

From: MJ Hathor I'm curious to know who doesn't know this already? Seriously, I think people just want to say how they feel without caring about what the rules are. Not that they don't know them its just they don't give a fuck. MJ I'm glad to hear you point that out! Let me respond by introducing you to Guido! Guido, this is the forums, and the forum community. Community, this is Guido and his lead pipe. Let me continue by saying that I want my old pal Guido to re-arrange the spine of rude attacking posters for them, not because I don't understand about violence, but because I want Guido to do what I want Guido to do, and don't care about who he hurts! See! Life IS fair! And tomorrow, Foolish Frost talks about why griefing leads to apparent griefer suicide... (There IS such a thing as suicide by stupidity, right?)

My very favorite strategy was someone remarking "Fuck your opinions."
I can't remember who said that, though...

If someone says "let's talk about how much of a turd you are" is that discussion, or abuse?

From: Ordinal Malaprop If someone says "let's talk about how much of a turd you are" is that discussion, or abuse? Hmnnnnnn.... Since you are already putting forward the idea they ARE a turd, then it's something along the level of C. If you had a series of options, starting with 'lovely person' and ending in 'toxic waste of human flesh' then you could say it's a discussion. That is until some CHOOSES an option that falls into either C or D above. Then it's lead pipe time! Remember kids! Manners is never having to say "Please don't kneecap me again, Mister!"

From: someone Guido, this is the forums, and the forum community.
Community, this is Guido and his lead pipe. On behalf of the Italian-American Anti-Defamation League I strenuously object to the implication and stereotype that Italian-Americans are prone to the use of strong-arm tactics. Anyone asserting this is a racist poopyhead and runs a decided risk of having a severed horse head accidentally appearing in their bed beside them.

On behalf of the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, I strenuously object to the speciesism inherent in the use of innocent horses for purposes of intimidation and believe that anyone contemplating such mal-treatment of our equine friends ought consider using their own head for such purposes instead.
Anyone who can contemplate such barbarism is sub-neanderthal and should be purged from the population using the most painful means possible.

From: Gabe Lippmann Is this a necro-personal attack? Not at all. A personal attack would be much more personal and much more...er... attack-like. That was a helpful distrubution / routing note.

Offering information is not the same as saying they are ignorant or stupid. It is therefore allowable in the context given. Now, saying WHY she needs the note would probably cross that line, and this is baiting the victim... But still, it follows the rules of proper conduct to the letter, and even shows some cunning in it's method. And remember folks: It's always better to show your cunning than to show your ass... <Dear god, did I just say that publicly?>

Ty for the reminder, Foolish.

I think MJ is on to something that lotsa people know what constitutes good manners or behaviour but just don't ... erm... care.
Personal Attack = author is too lazy or too poorly equipped, intellectually, to make a compelling argument.
