*scratches head*

Is it just me, or did nearly every sim become a blank slate?

Well....at least based on the in-world map! No buildings shown, and no pretty sky-signage!

Am I crazy, or is it merely coincidental?

I noticed this earlier today... objects still showed in some areas, but most parts of the map were blank, like the terrain map. I asked about it in Live Help, thinking that maybe I'd done something to my settings. Altruima Linden told me that it just meant that some of the map tiles hadn't updated yet since the last scan, and that it should be normal in another day or two. It's a relief to know I'm not the only one seeing it!

Ah, thought it was me. Some sims are missing, but when you zoom in, that's the ones that you can see the objects on.

It seems to be coming back, looks like the World Map scan had a hiccup.

It seemed to happen right after the asset server issues yesterday.

I can't see any sims that are not mainland sims. I see no private islands on the map. Also I am unable to see the game dev sims on the map at all, even though I can go there.

Zoom in and the private islands should appear. This happens to me all the time - I thought it was just the way the map worked.

Nope. I have had this problem for days. That does not fix it.

This problem was related to the asset system problems on Wednesday night. During the outage some simulator backups failed to get moved to the central repository. The map generation code was unable to find the backup info to generate map images so it fell back on yesterdays' data. However, at the moment the object data from yesterday is not kept around on the generation machine, so all the map generator could find was the terrain.

While investigating the problem I learned that the map could be rolled back to Tuesday so I did that sometime on Thursday afternoon. A day old map is less noticable than a totally empty one.

So what caused the asset server to crash in the first place? Aren't there backup servers and weren't the assets moved from a centralized to a distributed system a few months ago?
