Open Source generally means that the source code to some kind of script/program is open. This means that you can view and modify the code for your own purposes or for commercial purposes.

This doesn't mean that the code is public domain. This is a popular misconception about open source. Open source is about freedom to obtain code, modify it for your uses, and use it in your projects. It doesn't give you the right to steal the code as your own and then give it away or sell it for profit. There is still a copyright on open source code. If the copyright holder want's it public domain, they can do that. But most open source has some kind of copyright or copyleft statement with it. If there is no statement, assume it's fully copyrighted.

Free as in freedom, not free as in beer.

(edit)Oh wait, you're talking about open sourcing SL itself. Nevermind :D

my understanding is that they would release the code used to make secondlife to the playerbase, or at least the bits that wouldn't pose a security risk. letting us write our own versions of the client with different kinds of interfaces, or even hosting our own sim on our home pc's. possibly creating our own private grids which could be connected in some way to the main world, or entirely seperate and private. :D

A quote from GNU.org, this kinda sums up the principles:

From: someone
Free software (also Open Source software - Zonax) is a matter of the users' freedom to run, copy, distribute, study, change and improve the software. More precisely, it refers to four kinds of freedom, for the users of the software:

* The freedom to run the program, for any purpose (freedom 0).
* The freedom to study how the program works, and adapt it to your needs (freedom 1). Access to the source code is a precondition for this.
* The freedom to redistribute copies so you can help your neighbor (freedom 2).
* The freedom to improve the program, and release your improvements to the public, so that the whole community benefits (freedom 3). Access to the source code is a precondition for this.

I believe people are talking about open sourcing the client, not the server. They are separate entities. I have a hard time seeing LL open sourcing the server anytime soon. But what do I know.

a/apple.

An even more interesting question is... how did you get the name 'A Apple'?

According to the SL Join page we have access to... 'First names must be 2-31 characters in length'

Edit: Hmmm... 'Apple' as a last name... from doing an in-world search... wields interesting results, with most of the names being strange like 'SoP1 Apple' 'SoP2 Apple', and 'WebReg12 Apple' and includes a wide range of dates from Charter Members through your Jul 06 creation date... (wait, your inworld creation date is in 2002... yet forums creation date is Jul 06??) Curiouser and curiouser. So, do you work for Apple or something?

I did think that myself Ghoti - in fact, there's not one, but two anomalous names on this thread: how did "Fa nyak" get a lower-case surname?

Its acually quite interesting and funny.

Well i joined in 2002 and back then i dont remember having a minimal limit for the first name. I havent played since... 2002? haha. Yeah i know. SL didnt just seem to grab me in a first. I recently came across it again, about a month ago and started up a account then i realized i have this one from a long time ago, so i signed back on this one. I went in the forums yesterday to post and it showed my join date on the forums as July 2006, and my acual in-world is november 2002. So i talked to a Linden and they were confused as well, they said to send in a Bug Report. So i did. Now im just waiting to see if this shit will get fixed. All in all it doesnt matter to me.

And thats the story of my life.

And nah, im no Apple employee. They do have good computers and laptops though, im using one of they'res right now.

Excuse my English if its not spectacular or anything, Im not fluent in it. I live in Croatia, and English is a second languege that i had to learn. haha.

Seems perfectly fine to me.... better than some presumed english-language natives on here. ;)
