This was just briefly mentioned inside the SL Linux open alpha client discussion forums, so I guess it's time it gets "prime time" on the General forum: http://games.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=06/02/10/2116216From: someone strredwolf writes "Linden Labs has opened up the native Linux client to all users. This is an alpha version, though -- it has a lot of bugs and many hard edges. Prelim reports on the Linux client forums include: NVidia cards are better supported over ATI; get the latest drivers working in 24/32 bit color; some file editing to tweak settings is worth it; no sound; no file uploading; no texture downloading." Welcome, SLinuxers Successfully installed SLinux on a PIII@550 MHz, 256 MB of RAM, Riva TNT2, Ubuntu 5.0.4 + Nvidia drivers, and it runs at 5-6 fps on almost-minimal settings — not bad for a completely outdated 5-year-old machine!

I've been for the most part impressed by the stability and usability of the alpha client. Assuming the bugs are ironed out and the client gets proper support (something Don mentioned will happen), I'd think twice before switching back to the Win32 version.
Though, by opening the client to Linux, they've pretty much opened the floodgate to a whole slew of "homebrew" configurations. Not sure how that'll pan out in the support side of things.

Round of applause for the Lindens. =) I'm extremely happy about the client and the bugs are easily outweighed by the extra performance i've been getting. Good job.

Might be time to finally ditch Windoze on the desktops instead of being a Linux server boy.

I'm fairly new around here -- and "is there a Linux client" was one of the first questions I asked inside SL after I started getting comforatable. You see, I had run across something that indicated that the SL servers are running Debian Linux -- leading me to hope. My attempts to run SL under Wine and Cedega have ranged fromtoo slow to ... well, a blank screen.

I remember when the Linux client for SL was not yet a reality... and I hear many Resis enthused on using it asking, "When will it come?" And now it has! Things like that are always dear to me. While it took awhile in the timeline, for it to be born, like a baby, eyes wide and smiling and drinking digital milk from the mothers of invention, is a truely amazing occurrence indeed.

thats a hell of a baby to stay in the mother THAT long i cant wait to try it, but A im no linux guru so i dont wanna fiddle with an alpha version, ill wait till beta (or what normal users of sl call the offical client) comes out and B in my good ol fashioned timing it came out the week after i moved to a wireless lan card, which my current POS distro doesnt seem to suppot (heh last i checked fedora core wasnt supporting gcc nor my sound blaster live so big suprise there) Once they get more testing / support done ill have a new distro installed and my wireless woes sorted out so its all good ps im planning on moving back to either mandrake (cause im lazy) or slackware (cause its good) so if anyone has any suggestions on getting a netgear WG311v2 to work with either would be helpfull, i have private messages enabled (it doesnt even have to run at the 54mb speed, just connect)

From: Eboni Khan SL on Linux = more Haxx0rs I don't think so. Rather: more scripters, builders, creative people who are willing to experiment with new stuff.

From: Torley Linden I remember when the Linux client for SL was not yet a reality... and I hear many Resis enthused on using it asking, "When will it come?" And now it has! I still think it was too early to be on Slashdot. The Linux client is not yet as good as the Windows one. - No fullscreen (maybe acceptable, for now) - No video memory detection -- this sucks, because textures won't all render Only thing that helps is fiddling with settings.ini - No hotkeys -- This is very very annoying. Though maybe acceptable for new users, for a while. It still looks promising, but I think it was early for Slashdot.

What about sound?
02-13-2006 06:23
I was talking to an SLinuxer online yesterday and he said there wasn't any support for the Linux audio software (OSS?) that he used.

Pretty ancient stuff eh? It is yes. Odd that each new Windows release is more UNIX-oriented than the last. Underneath the GUIs, it's getting pretty damn hard to tell them apart. Guess those Ancients got it right the first time.

Now if someone would kindly make a VNCable 'SecondLife Remote Client' so I can pull SL from work.

Now if someone would kindly make a VNCable 'SecondLife Remote Client' so I can pull SL from work. Have you tried using VNC with SL? it works decently, though the limited color pallette makes things look ugly. Windows XP remote desktop/terminal services replaces the graphics card driver, so SL will definately not work through that. I may dabble in VNC's programming if I manage to get my gentoo OS to replace 100% of what my Windows XP system was doing (email, http, no-ip, tomcat, OSMP). My free time is currently occupied by that ==Chris
