Had a strange incident recently on Wailele Isle, where I am an estate manager. Two buildings just went AWOL. The two bungalo homes vanished without a trace, leaving their loose parts, like furinishings and doors, hanging in place where they used to be. Lots of other stuff nearby was untouched.
In retrospect, I had noticed it in passing for a few days as I hit the telehub there on my way to other points in the sim. But I was moving fast and just chalked it up to the area not being fully rezzed yet. But yesterday the sim owner and I were there, working in that area, and we both could see that while everything else had rezzed normally, those two buildings were, in fact, missing. I checked my lost and found and my trash, and there was no sign of them. (The main structure is clearly named, so wouldn't have been an anonymous 'Object' in the inventory.)
Now, the sim owner and I should have been the only two people with edit rights on those buildings. They were made by me, and sold to him months ago. He didn't delete them. I have edit rights on his stuff, but I am certain I didn't delete them either.
Couldn't have been an 'accidental drag select' while deleting something else, or we would have gotten the other loose parts too. Couldn't be autoreturn, because autoreturn is set to zero. Besides, I know the order in which the homes on that lagoon were placed, and the homes on either side of the missing two were placed just before or just after those two, while the doors, water plane for the tub, and other loose parts of the missing structures were placed in the same instant, as part of the same from-inventory drag.
Very strange...
I replaced the two buildings completely, from my master copies. So the damage has already been fixed. But I sure would like to know what happened to those two homes!

Something similar happend on our Group-Land a few days ago. A Complete Building just disappeared from one moment to the other. Noone deleted it or returned it to the owner. But all furniture still was there.. in the air.

Did you check out some of the "object"'s in your inventory? If it had been returned unlinked you would have a whole lot of objects. That happens to me occasionally, I take something into inventory and it picks up unlinked. How's your prim limit looking? Pretty full or ok? If it's pretty full, someone rezzing a HIGH prim object could cause some prims to be returned. Also if the building was set to group anyone in the group could edit it.
Just some thoughts to throw out. Glad you got it fixe and hope it doesn't happen again.

Any chance there was a sim restart / roll back around the time they were placed. I hear rollbacks can eat things.

Prim limit in the area that the buildings vanished from has well over 5000 prims free. It's in the resort area, which includes all land in the sim not explicitly part of a residential parcel. The sim isn't anywhere close to it's prim limits.
No massive number of unlinked prims in my lost and found or in my inventory. If they came in unlinked, there would have been 140 or so pieces. And even if there were, at least a dozen of them would have the structure's name on the individual prims, because of the way I tag sub-assemblies as I build.
No sim restarts or rollbacks happened. The sim owner would have known if that happened, and I would have immediately seen evidence of a rollback, as I have been building prototype buildings on a sky platform in the area. A rollback would have made some of my other work vanish too, and would have taken far more other structures before getting these two.
Also, when I am building other things there, I make a point to work on a platform 700 M above the island, with 'select only my objects' checked, and always having my camera placed so that my selection rectangles can select only my own parts, while anything beyond my building platform is a void sim, or open sky. No way I could accidentally select a couple of buildings 700 M below me. I'm kind of paranoid about doing that, as I have edit rights on darned near the whole sim.
