It seems to me that there are a lot of creative people in sl, who like some artists in RL don't have the business sense of even a sea cucumber, are there Artist Management groups yet ? If not does anyone think there is a demand for them?

Alot of the arty farty types tend to be dirty smelly bums who don't want to be controlled or to smell nice.

Given a choice between a gutter on park ave and a gutter in flushing meadows, well things are looking up, think positive!

I'm one of those sea cucumbers. A lot of folks in SL really like my work, and I've put lots of stuff in a few galleries, but so far, I haven't technically made a personal sale. I'd be up for some sort of agent.

There are some managers in SL but usually deal with musicians and djs.
With the artist community in SL, it's really just a big circle of friends. Same people go to the shows, and you can always network and hobnob with the people there.

As an artist with my own gallery, I have to say that it's not such an 'in crowd'. There are a LOT of artists here, and a lot more people interested in them, and I regularly host external exhibitions and events and rarely see more than a few people I recognise at all of them :)

Any 'group of friends' image you may get could come from the fact that there are a small number of people working to try and create united sources of information about RL art and arts events in SL, and you'll hear those names often. That doesn't mean it isn't wide open. You tend to become friends with those who share a common interest, yes, but you also hope to find new friends for that group.

I used to curate a gallery for new players, helping them through uploads and discussing options for sales - prices, permissions, pros and cons. That's no longer running, but I do try and seek out new players and people who want to get their work up but don't know how.

Ok, so as an actual answer (!) I haven't heard of any management groups personally, but I think that's largely because there are a lot of people very keen to get new RL art into the world and happy to help on a personal basis.

I'm a musician, have solo projects (kizzume.com and myspace.com/kizzume), and am in a band (soon to have links). I've been working with someone in SL to try to set up a concert for my band, and it should be pretty cool.

I'm definitely one of those types who doesn't even have the business sense of a sea cucumber. <grin> I also probably don't shower as much as I should either LOL....

There are -so- many great artists out there, visual and music/sound, that will never get heard because they don't have much business sense.

I don't have 'business sense' - I built my first gallery because I saw others, and thought, 'well, someone might like my stuff...'. And the population is large enough that somebody will, whatever it is! I get sales because people like my work enough to keep it, and that is the most incredible feeling and confidence boost.

I agree that there needs to be more promotion along the lines of 'You can do this!', because it did take me until I saw others doing it to realise that it's possible. It was a pretty harsh learning process alone, which is why I try to help people out with it now. I could see creative people getting lost amongst the clubs and random and never seeing the possibilities to expand the things they do into this virtual space.

So how do you contact the wealth of new talent who don't know to search for information about getting their talent into SL, because they don't know it's possible in the first place?

I'd be happy to offer a brainstorming chat with any artist (or musician) that has the talent, but doesn't have the business sense to get the ball rolling. I do this sort of thing as my RL profession (getting gigs, promo, marketing, entertainment, shows, events, talent displays, etc). There's alot of tips that translate from RL to SL. Anyone up for a chat on how to go about doing what they want to do creatively, or interested in talking about the business side of artforms, please IM me anytime.

Any time you host any exhibits, let me know. I've been to one so far, but that was just by luck :/
