How to View Stereograms

Hehehehe... I like stereograms!
  1. Make a screen capture.
  2. Make a depth-map screen capture using new GUI tools.
  3. In your imageeditor of choice, fiddle with the depth map.
    1. In Photoshop invert the image Image>Adjustments>Invert (Ctrl I)
    2. Then fix the contrast Image>Adjustments>Auto Contrast (Alt+Shift+Control+L)

  4. Using a freeware program like Olej's Stereogram Generator, Stereocreator generate a sterogram. :D
    1. In Stereocreator load up the depth (the depth map) and texture maps (your screen capture)
    2. Play with settings..
    3. Generate and Save!

  5. Share with us all three images: sterogram, screen capture, and depth map. :D

Here are mine so far:

Can SL now capture depth maps? That would be a nice feature for stereogram use.

Yesh, it's in the preview.

You can also freeze and rotate/pan a still scene and take multiple snapshots... whisch is good for doing something like this:

Very nice. Stereograms can work when imported into SL.

I think a RL environment completely covered with stereograms would be trippy.

WOW! THIS IS SO FRIGGIN COOL! I never knew these could be made by anyone.

Ok, I can see em pretty easy.... but is the objective to completely unfocus your eyes? or completely focus them?

Its kinda hard to explain, you have to unfocus your eyes while staring at the picture. Something someone showed me is put your face next to the screen, let your eyes get out of focus, and then pull back slowly untill you can see the picture.

I used to see these things backwards for the longest time... the popped out part would be pushed in, and the rest would be popped out. It was really odd.

I try to relax my eyes and look about 6 to 12 inches past the surface of the monitor and wait.

Could one make an animated 3D effect gif from a series of stereograms?

I think you can do animation with stereograms once you get your eyes accustomed to it.

Somebody did a stereogram engine for Quake a while ago.. It was insanely cool, but all one color.

Never been able to see these. My vision varies greatly between my left and right eye.

Look for the repeating pattern, usually a dark blob that repeats 5 or 6 times across the image, cross your eyes until two of them line up perfectly and relax....

Every time I look at these, the image shows up, but it is inverted. Maybe my brain is inverted!

Arrraaaggghhh! Inverted Brain!

I wish I could see any of those. However, being stereoscopically blind, I can't. Still I'm quite sure it's good work, so congrats!

Me either. :(

Here's how I found out. I was in grad school studying neuroscience and a friend's lab down the hall needed subjects for an experiment comparing human stereoscopy to that in monkeys.

I kept losing to the monkeys.

Really frustrated the grad student running the experiment. Eventually, they took me to a TV screen designed to display contours via stereograms. Ran me through a bunch of basic tests. Concluded I was never going to be able to see the images.

Interesting feeling, that.
