Having worked with websites for 3 years, URLS and movies have absolutely nothing to do with each other. And this is an off-topic thread if I ever saw one.

And this is an off-topic thread if I ever saw one. hmmm... you need to use a URL from a movie to view the movie in SL *duh*, I don't really understand how off topic it is. Not much more off topic then anything else in the general catagory. This was just unfair, I just asked for some help on how people get their movies into SL by use of URLS *duh*. ps. oops i posted as an alt, dang. |

Well, it certainly would have helped matters if you specified that in your initial post, something like "How do I stream movies into SL"? See how easy that was? And you wouldn't even have to be rude about it.
You have to convert your movie files into a Quicktime format and upload them to a server. After that, you get the URL of your movie, which would be something like: http://www.mywebspace.com/movie.avi and put that in the Land tab where you can set the movie and audio stream of your land. You also have to associate a texture to be the movie screen, drop the texture you want to use in the texture box by where you put the URL in and then put the same texture on a prim. Voila. _____________________

Not much more off topic then anything else in the general catagory Sorry, moved this to off-topic this morning because your orinigal post was so unclear. I thought you were looking for help on converting video to DVD and got URL's stuck in your brain. Your second post clarified that you were actually trying ot stream movies into SL. Moved back to General. _____________________

URL = Uniform Resource Locator. They exist so you don't have to type numbers to get to the webpage.

Technically URLs have nothing to do with using hostnames vs. IP addresses. A URL is just a string that uniquely (for our purposes) a single resource on the internet. It is comprised of three elements:
1. The protocol. This tells you how you're going to get the item. Most commonly, it will be http, which is the protocol used to retrieve web pages. More basically, it tells your computer what language to use when talking to another computer. It goes at the start of the url and is followed by a colon and two slashes, like so: http:// 2. The hostname. This is the machine name (or number) of the server that has the item you want. Normally it's in the name for (like google.com), but sometimes it's in IP address form (64.233.187.99), the computer doesn't care which. If it is in hostname form, the computer will automatically convert it to an IP address for you. Hostnames are used because they're easier to remember than ip addresses, among other reasons. The hostname is stored after the :// but before the first /. 3. The resource path and name. This tells the remote host (the one you specified in part 2) what file you want. It is everything past the hostname in the URL. So: protocol://hostname/resource name Example: http://google.com/index.html protocol: http hostname: google.com resource: index.html Note: web servers have default files they will return if you don't specify a resource. So if you leave the resource blank, it will still work. Now, as far as secondlife is concerned, you need to convert a movie to a .mov file, and put it somehwere on the internet. Then use the URL field in Second Life to point to wherever you put that movie. Thus ends the beginners course on the Uniform Resource Locator |

I've personally never set up a server from home, but this link might give you some information. Personally, it would probably be more cost effective and easier (and safer) to get webhosting space from a hosting company. _____________________

I'm sorry, but I was laughing all throughout that first post, until Cory clarified it.
Alas, I have no useful comments at all. Heheheh (time for my meds). |
