It occurs to me that it would be possible to take a "3D snapshot", saving the current state of the virtual world, then go back later and take 2D snapshots as one desires.
Like an incremental backup, subsequent 3D snapshots would just save what's changed since the first 3D snapshot in a 3D snapshot set.
It might be limited to certain draw distance, no teleporting, and other limitations as needed to keep it from being too utterly ridiculous in terms of hard disk space.
